(5 Sep 1996) English/Nat
Two days after the signing of a peace pact between the Philippine government and Muslim secessionists, Nur Misuari, the Chairman of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) has paid a visit to Zamboanga province on Mindanao - the centre of opposition to the pact.
Mindanao's majority Christian population fears the peace pact will give Muslims too much power.
A huge crowd gathered to welcome M-N-L-F chairman Nur Misuari in Taluksangay, a Muslim seaside settlement on the outskirts of Zamboanga province.
He arrived amid tight security - the province has been at the centre of opposition to a peace pact signed between the government and the M-N-L-F last Monday.
Misuari came to drum up support for the Southern Philippines Council for Peace and Development -- or S-P-C-P-D .
The council is a part of the peace agreement that will allow the M-N-L-F to monitor economic development in 14 provinces of Mindanao, including Zamboanga.
Mindanao is considered by Filipino Muslims as their homeland, but the majority of the population is Christian.
They fear that the S-P-C-P-D will give the Muslims too much power.
At a press conference on his arrival, however, Misuari said the people of Mindanao should now start working together for the development of the region.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Everyone must cooperate now. Co-operate for peace, for development and for progress. We cannot be isolated anymore."
SUPER CAPTION: Nur Misuari, MNLF Chairman
While all seems set for the establishment of the peace council, there are still moves to stop it through the appeal courts.
Misuari said they were no threat.
SOUNDBITE:
"They can bring it even as high as the moon, as high as the stars and the heavens. We don't mind, we don't mind. That is an act of futility, I assure you."
SUPER CAPTION: Nur Misuari, MNLF Chairman
The peace pact ended a quarter of a century of armed hostilities between the Philippine government and M-N-L-F troops.
At least 120-thousand died in the violence and most provinces of Mindanao remained undeveloped as a result of the fighting.
