In-Group Bias in the Indian Judiciary: Evidence from 5 Million Criminal Cases
A CASI Virtual Seminar with Paul Novosad
in partnership with the South Asia Center
November 4, 2021
About the Seminar:
Paul Novosad studies judicial in-group bias in Indian criminal courts, collecting data on over 5 million criminal case records from 2010–2018. He exploits quasi-random assignment of cases to judges to examine whether defendant outcomes are affected by assignment to a judge with a similar identity. He estimates tight zero effects of in-group bias along gender and religious identity and finds limited in-group bias in some (but not all) settings where identity is particularly salient, but even here, his confidence intervals reject effect sizes smaller than those in much of the prior literature.
About the Speaker:
Paul Novosad is an Associate Professor of Economics at Dartm...

#Illyrians #Byzantine #Illyria
Albanian History holds much controversy as mainstream Albanian history has done very little if any actual scientific study on the ethnogenesis of the Albanian people. Along with Serbian History, both Albanian History and Serbian History share a mutual connection which is larger than previously thought.
Teodora Toleva, PhD discovered secret documents that were hidden in the Vienna Royal Archives, that showed how the Austro-Hungarian empire, following 3 secret conferences held in the late 19th century, set the plan to create an Albanian nation.
The idea was to unite and combine all of these various tribes of different ethnicities that could not mutually understand one another and held conflicts. They would also set to make plans to Albanize the Serb and Greek population, therefore creating an artificial nation where a unified language, alphabet was put in place. This was all done for Austro-Hungarian Geopolitical purposes of preventing Serbia from reclaiming lost land from the crumbling Ottoman Empire as well as restricting Serbia’s access to the Adriatic sea.
Albanian history would then become falsified by Austro-Hungarian historians such as Von Hahn, Benjamin Von Kallay, Baron Von Zweideneck. They would create a pseudo-romantic narrative that portrays the present day Albanians as ancient Illyrians, a theory that lacks all evidence and primary sources. This was done for Austria-Hungary geopolitical goals such as creating a nation that will antagonise the Serbs and prevent Serbia from having access to the Adriatic sea.
A true look at genetical, archeological, linguistical as well as historical records reveals a completely different picture about the fascinating history of the Albanians.
In Eastern Roman (Byzantine) sources, Albanois are first mentioned in the 11th century by Michael Attaleiates. These are the Normans along with other mercenaries such as the Varangians that are found in Italy. In the period from the 12th to the 15th century, in Byzantine sources, these new settlers and migrants are mentioned as Arbanitoi, Arvanite, Alvani and Alvanite.
All of these terms are greek and latin metathesis-altered terms of the original term Rabanasi denoting the new settlers that settled around the mountain Raban.
Ptolemy's mention of Albani and Albanopolis is a Greco-Roman metathesis of the original Raban and Albanopolis being Belgrade (White City)
Michael Attaleiates and Michael Psellos, Byzantine historians from the 11th century, described the attempt of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) General from Sicily, George Maniakes, who attempted to take the Eastern Roman throne with the army he had gathered in Sicily and southern Italy and landed in Durres across the Adriatic sea. He bought with him the Albanois who were ethnically Normans, Franks, Varangians and even Christianized Berbers.
These mercenaries such as the Maniaketes who named themselves after George Maniakes and others who came as reserve companies for George Maniakete's war campaign against Constantine IX settled in
Albania. When Maniaketes got killed at the battle of Ostrovo, they could not return to Italy and Sicily, because the ships that brought them returned as soon as the soldiers disembarked. These “so-called Albanians” as Anna Komnena referred to them as, settled in the area of Raban, near Kroja, which became their center.
These migrants were a mixture of Franks, Latins, Berbers, possibly Armenians as well. They were referred to as Albanois even in Italy, a Latin-Frankish term for someone who is not indigenous on the region that they are in, basically a foreigner.
Evliya Celebi, a prominent Turkish historian during his travels to the balkans, encountered these tribes in the 16th century. He noted in his travel book called “Seyahatname” that these tribes told him of their origins.
Some claimed to have Arabic / Berber ancestry and said that they mingled with the Franks at the time of their arrival and therefor due to there symbiosis with the so-called “Albanians” of Italy produced the Albanian tongue which was at the time a mixture of Frankish/Berber Arabic.
According to earlier Eastern Roman (Byzantine) sources such as Stefanos Byzantinus, it was reported that the Mirditi tribe of Albania are the descendants of Mardaites whom Emperor Justinian II bought over from Syria. Mardaites came from Syria along with Khurramites settled by the region of the Durres.

Paul Novosad is an Associate Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College. His research examines why poor countries have remained poor for so long, and what policy interventions can help improve people's lives in developing countries. His team builds new open source economic data from information age sources like satellites and private and government sector data exhaust. Some of his recent projects have focused on judicial bias in India, the impacts of India's large-scale rural roads program, the impacts of mineral sector development, and on measuring intergenerational mobility in developing countries. He also has several projects on machine learning and statistical methods with applications to the U.S. mortality crisis. He is a founder of Development Data Lab and a creator of The SHRUG - an open data platform for socioeconomic research in India, along with Sam Asher and Toby Lunt.

Please take this and all things to the Lord for confirmation.
