Novo Brdo (in Serbian; Ново Брдо) or Novobërdë/Artanë (in Albanian) is a town and municipality in the Pristina district of eastern Kosovo. The population of the municipality is estimated at 6,953 people (2014).
Name
The name was derived from the medieval Serbian Novo Brdo, a mining town settled by Saxon miners and Croatian traders in medieval Serbia.
History
Novo Brdo was mentioned with its present name in historical documents as early as 1326. Previously it was known as , Novus Mons or Novamonte in Latin and as Nyeuberghe in Saxon texts. The famous Mediaeval Serbian writer Vladislav the Grammarian was born there between 1410 and 1415 .
Novo Brdo Fortress (Serbian:Тврђава Ново Брдо, Tvrđava Novo Brdo; Albanian:Kalaja e Novoberdës) is a medieval fortress in Kosovo. Its ruins are located near the town of Novo Brdo, about 20km from Pristina and 30 – 35km from Gnjilane. The fortress was built in the early 14th century to protect gold, silver, iron and lead mines which were abundant throughout the area. Novo Brdo was famous for its silver. Together with the castles of Prizrenac 12km to the southwest and Prilepac 13km to the southeast, which guard access roads to the fortress, Novo Brdo helped form a defensive complex overlooking the lucrative mining operations. Novo Brdo was at its height during the Serbian Despotate (1402–1459), when it was the most important mining area and second most important town in Serbia. A significant number of Saxon miners and a large Croatian merchant colony from Republic of Ragusa lived within the town. The town had its voivode but also its governor (kefalia), because it was a seat of administrative unit of despotate.

Novo Brdo / Artana Fortress
The imposing ruins of Novo Brdo/ Artana castle date back to the fifteenth century when the area was a thriving mining community, larger than the Paris of its day. An alloy of silver and gold was mined here, and the miners are mentioned by Dante. Now the castle is abandoned, but the lush rolling landscape is the perfect place for hiking, biking, or relaxing. An initiative offering rural home stay and guided tours has brought members of the local Serb and Albanian communities together, and the details of the accommodation available can be found on their website or at the local information centre.

NOVO BRDO, KOSOVO | Cinematic Film ft. Fidan Begolli
Novo Brdo Fortress is a spectacular castle ruin with sweeping mountainous landscapes that extend further then the eye can behold. It is special because there are few tourists, and more importantly the people that reside here are some of the most hospitable I've ever encountered.
This short cinematic film features Fidan Begolli, a local Albanian, who is an amazing photographer and just found out, a damn good actor. Join us on our journey as he takes in the beautiful sights, while I scurry around like a mad man trying to capture the "perfect" shot.
