Notation

In linguistics and semiotics, a notation is a system of graphics or symbols, characters and abbreviated expressions, used in artistic and scientific disciplines to represent technical facts and quantities by convention. Therefore, a notation is a collection of related symbols that are each given an arbitrary meaning, created to facilitate structured communication within a domain knowledge or field of study.

Standard notations refer to general agreements in the way things are written or denoted. The term is generally used in technical and scientific areas of study like mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, but can also be seen in areas like business, economics and music.

Written communication

Phonographic writing systems, by definition, use symbols to represent components of auditory language, i.e. speech, which in turn refers to things or ideas. The five main kinds of phonographic notational system are the alphabet and syllabary. Some written languages are more consistent in their correlation of written symbol or grapheme and sound or phoneme, and are therefore considered to have better phonemic orography.

Scientific notation

Scientific notation (also referred to as standard form or standard index form) is a way of expressing numbers that are too big or too small to be conveniently written in decimal form. It is commonly used by scientists, mathematicians and engineers. On scientific calculators it is known as "SCI" display mode.

In scientific notation all numbers are written in the form

(m times ten raised to the power of n), where the exponent n is an integer, and the coefficient m is any real number (however, see normalized notation below), called the significand or mantissa. The term "mantissa" may cause confusion, however, because it can also refer to the fractional part of the common logarithm. If the number is negative then a minus sign precedes m (as in ordinary decimal notation).

Decimal floating point is a computer arithmetic system closely related to scientific notation.

Normalized notation

Any given integer can be written in the form m×10^ⁿ in many ways: for example, 350 can be written as 7002350000000000000♠3.5×10² or 7002350000000000000♠35×10¹ or 7002350000000000000♠350×10⁰.

Notation3, or N3 as it is more commonly known, is a shorthand non-XML serialization of Resource Description Framework models, designed with human-readability in mind: N3 is much more compact and readable than XML RDF notation. The format is being developed by Tim Berners-Lee and others from the Semantic Web community. A formalization of the logic underlying N3 was published by Berners-Lee and others in 2008.

N3 has several features that go beyond a serialization for RDF models, such as support for RDF-based rules. Turtle is a simplified, RDF-only subset of N3.

Bill Gates net worth could be written as 9.3 x 10^10 A nanometer can be written as 1.0 x 10^-9 Lets go over the basics of scientific notation 9.3 x 10^8 The coefficient must be between 1 and 10 The exponent should be an integer and can be positive of negative If you have to move the decimal to the left , the exponent will be positive If you have to move the decimal to the right the exponent will be negative 530,000 5.3×10^5 First example. In this example we do not have a decimal so you can assume it is after the last zero. The coefficient must be between 1 and 10 so we need to move the decimal five places to the left because 5.3 is between 1 and 10 The exponent will be positive so it will be written as 5.3 x 10 5 .00078 x 10^-4 In this example in order for the coefficient to be between 1 and 10 we need to move the decimal four places to the right 7.8 is between 1 and 10 We need to move the decimal to the right so the exponent will be negative The scientific notation will equal 7.8 x 10^ -4

Notation

In linguistics and semiotics, a notation is a system of graphics or symbols, characters and abbreviated expressions, used in artistic and scientific disciplines to represent technical facts and quantities by convention. Therefore, a notation is a collection of related symbols that are each given an arbitrary meaning, created to facilitate structured communication within a domain knowledge or field of study.

Standard notations refer to general agreements in the way things are written or denoted. The term is generally used in technical and scientific areas of study like mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology, but can also be seen in areas like business, economics and music.

Written communication

Phonographic writing systems, by definition, use symbols to represent components of auditory language, i.e. speech, which in turn refers to things or ideas. The five main kinds of phonographic notational system are the alphabet and syllabary. Some written languages are more consistent in their correlation of written symbol or grapheme and sound or phoneme, and are therefore considered to have better phonemic orography.
