Learn to convert numbers into and out of scientific notation. Scientific notation is a way to express very big and very small numbers with exponents as a power of ten. It is also sometimes called exponential notation. In this video, we will have an explanation and tutorial, and do practice and example problems.

Scientific Notation - Explained!
Scientists have to work with some very large and some very small numbers. To represent these numbers more easily, they use scientific notation. Scientific notation relies on powers of 10. This video gives examples of how to represent a large and small number and explains powers of ten.

Scientific Notation ( An introduction )
Bill Gates has a net worth of around 93,000,000,000 dollars.
This is a large number to write.
A nanometer is 1/ billionth of a meter which is written as 0.000000001 m
Both of these numbers can be written using scientific notation.
Bill Gates net worth could be written as 9.3 x 10^10
A nanometer can be written as 1.0 x 10^-9
Lets go over the basics of scientific notation
9.3 x 10^8
The coefficient must be between 1 and 10
The exponent should be an integer and can be positive of negative
If you have to move the decimal to the left , the exponent will be positive
If you have to move the decimal to the right the exponent will be negative
530,000 5.3×10^5
First example. In this example we do not have a decimal so you can assume it is after the last zero. The coefficient must be between 1 a...

Scientific Notation and Dimensional Analysis
In science, sometimes we have to talk about very large and very small numbers. We need a special way to do this called scientific notation. We also need a way to convert between different units of measurement. I know, I know, you hate math. But it's really easy math, and Professor Dave will help make it even easier!

The coefficient must be between 1 and 10 so we need to move the decimal five places to the left because 5.3 is between 1 and 10
The exponent will be positive so it will be written as 5.3 x 10 5
.00078 x 10^-4
In this example in order for the coefficient to be between 1 and 10 we need to move the decimal four places to the right 7.8 is between 1 and 10
We need to move the decimal to the right so the exponent will be negative
The scientific notation will equal 7.8 x 10^ -4

Pre-Algebra on Khan Academy: No way, this isn't your run of the mill arithmetic. This is Pre-algebra. You're about to play with the professionals. Think of pre-algebra as a runway. You're the airplane and algebra is your sunny vacation destination. Without the runway you're not going anywhere. Seriously, the foundation for all higher mathematics is laid with many of the concepts that we will introduce to you here: negative numbers, absolute value, factors, multiples, decimals, and fractions to name a few. So buckle up and move your seat into the upright position. We're about to take off!
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

In science, sometimes we have to talk about very large and very small numbers. We need a special way to do this called scientific notation. We also need a way to convert between different units of measurement. I know, I know, you hate math. But it's really easy math, and Professor Dave will help make it even easier!
