Nostell Priory is a Palladian house located in Nostell, near Crofton close to Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England, approached by the Doncaster road from Wakefield. It dates from 1733, and was built for the Winn family on the site of a medieval priory. The Priory and its contents were given to the National Trust in 1953 by the trustees of the estate and Rowland Winn, 3rd Baron St Oswald.
The estate was purchased in 1654 by the London alderman, Sir Rowland Winn, after the owner was declared bankrupt in 1650. Construction of the present house started in 1733, and the furniture, furnishings and decorations made for the house remain in situ. The Winns were textile merchants in London, George Wynne of Gwydir was appointed Draper to Elizabeth I, his grandson, Sir George Winn was created 1st Baronet of Nostell in 1660 and the family subsequently owed its wealth to the coal under the estate, and later from leasing land in Lincolnshire for mining iron ore during the Industrial Revolution.
Coal mining at Nostell began in the 9th Century and continued until 1987. Nostell Colliery was known locally as 'the family pit' due to the welfare schemes introduced by the Winn family far in advance of similar schemes prior to nationalisation. In 1880, terraced houses were built close by to the colliery and the settlement was nicknamed 'Cribbins Lump' after the builder by the inhabitants. The settlement was later renamed 'New Crofton' by Lord St Oswald but the nickname remained until the houses were demolished in the 1980s. Nostell Colliery closed in 1987.

The history of the Nostell Dolls’ House
Only a handful of dolls’ houses have survived from the 18th century and Nostell’s is the only one you can see in the original family home it was designed for. Arguably the most detailed and authentic of its kind, Nostell’s dolls’ house is a true masterpiece of craftsmanship and a window into a past world.

Nostell Priory and the unusual Obelisk Lodge, near Crofton, West Yorkshire, UK.
An impressive house with a nice deer park. The Obelisk Lodge is really impressive.
My comments about the National Trust relates to their attitude that photographers cannot take editorial photos of their properties and submit them to photo libraries for licensing, even when the photos have been taken from public footpaths. They use they status to bully photographers and agencies claiming photography for commercial gain is banned in their original t&c's, even though they relate to the early days of photography when photographers took photos on site and used dangerous chemicals in small trucks to process them on site.
