It is primarily a residential and shopping area, with several supermarkets and many restaurants. The artsdepot, a local community arts centre including a gallery, a studio and a theatre, opened on 23 October 2004, in an attempt to revitalise the area and to fill a gap created by the demolition of the Gaumont cinema, and what had become an open-air market.
The area has mainly 19th century housing ranging from quaint Victorian cottages to substantially larger Victorian double-fronted houses. There is also a dominant Edwardian style toward Woodside Park and Nether Street but with some modern houses, probably built between the 1930s and 1960s, towards Friern Barnet. On Friern Barnet Lane there are some mansion style properties and on Tally-Ho corner, a development of luxury flats, above the artsdepot with views over Mill Hill and Hertfordshire. There are few Local Authority estates in the area but the largest, and still pleasant, is in Woodside Park where ex-Spice GirlEmma Bunton grew up.
It is predominantly a residential suburb, with three town centres: North Finchley, East Finchley and Finchley Church End (Finchley Central).
History
Finchley probably means "Finch's clearing" or "finches' clearing" in late Anglo-Saxon; the name was first recorded in the early 13th century. Finchley is not recorded in Domesday Book, but by the 11th century its lands were already held by the Bishop of London.
In early medieval period the area was sparsely populated woodland.
Proper farming began in the 12th and 13th centuries and by the 15th and 16th centuries the woods on the eastern side of the parish had been cleared to form Finchley Common. The medieval Great North Road, which ran through the common, was notorious for highwaymen until the early 19th century.
The Story of Finchley Common from Barnet libraries and local studies.
Finchley Common was 3.5 square kilometres and existed from the 1590s to about 1810s. This video tells the story of how Finchley Common came into existence, the famous Hog Market that fed the Royal Navy, and military encampments. It also tells of the activities of the highwaymen who exploited the commons lawlessness and remoteness, and how it came to be enclosed in 1816.

Police forensics investigate fatal Finchley double shooting - Daily Mail
Relatives of the victims in East Finchley, north London said the gang targeted 21-year-old Bervil Ekofo (left) before shooting his aunt, 52-year-old mother-of-nine Anny Ekofo (right). Family members claimed the killers were searching for another man and shot Bervil while he slept in a case of mistaken identity. Bervil’s sister said he was a psychology student who was ‘never in trouble’. Neighbours say they believe Bervill was shot in the head while his aunt was shot in the shoulder. Relatives of the victims in East Finchley, north London said the gang targeted 21-year-old Bervil Ekofo (left) before shooting his aunt, 52-year-old mother-of-nine Anny Ekofo (right). Police have launched a murder investigation. No arrests have been made.
