Its name was originally Norberton(e), [from the Old English north buritum' or granary], as it was named in a similar way to Surbiton on the opposite side of the Hogsmill River.
Norbiton's housing stock largely consists of large family Victorian and Edwardian houses, plus small localised brownfield redevelopments of 1960s, 1980s and modern flats. It contains more council and social housing than most other areas of Kingston - one of the largest such sites, the New Cambridge Estate, was used as a fictional council estate in TV drama The Bill. It is home also to Kingston Cemetery on Bonner Hill.
From Coombe past Kingston Hospital, Norbiton Station, the low bridge and St Peter's Church. I was born at the hospital and lived next to the church in the 1950's. In the 1960's I lived in the road on the right just before the first traffic signals. The black thing in the sky is the top of the hospital chimney. At the end the green wrapping around the top of a tower block can be seen. The top five floors were ablaze in 2010. Just before that, the low old building facing the camera was a school from 1842 until 1960. The word 'SCHOOL' in black bricks can be seen as a blur above the right window.
