Nishonoseki stable(二所ノ関部屋,Nishonoseki-beya) was a stable of sumo wrestlers, part of the Nishonoseki group of stables (ichimon) named after it. It first appeared in the late eighteenth century and was re-established in 1935 by the 32nd YokozunaTamanishiki while still active. The former ōzekiSaganohana produced the stable's greatest wrestler, yokozunaTaihō, who won a record for the time of 32 yūshō or tournament championships between 1961 and 1971. The stable's last head coach, former sekiwakeKongo, took charge in 1976, when he was adopted by the widow of the previous head. He has also been on the board of directors of the Japan Sumo Association. The heya's fortunes declined in later years. It had no sekitori wrestlers after the retirement of Daizen in 2003 and at the end had just three active wrestlers, all in sandanme or below (and one of whom, Kasachikara, was 41 years old, and the second oldest active wrestler in sumo). The naturalisation of a Chinese born rikishi, Ryūtei, opened up another spot in the heya for a foreigner, and a Mongolian rikishi was recruited in March 2010, but he retired in May 2011.
Nishonoseki stable(二所ノ関部屋,Nishonoseki beya), formerly known as Matsugane stable, is a stable of sumo wrestlers. It was founded in 1990 by Wakashimazu of the Futagoyama stable. Wakashimazu, now known as Nishonoseki Oyakata, is also the chairman of the Nishonoseki group of stables or ichimon. It has produced three top makuuchi division wrestlers in that time; Wakakosho (2000), Wakatsutomu (2001) and Harunoyama (2004). After the retirement of Harunoyama in November 2006 the stable had no sekitori until Matsutani reached the jūryō division in March 2010. As of May 2015 it had twelve wrestlers.
In late 2014, the general consensus among those with connections to the Nishonoseki ichimon was that an ichimon so named without a Nishinoseki stable as its head was a misnomer. In accordance with this general opinion, the oyakata of Matsugane stable, which had absorbed support personnel from the defunct Nishonoseki when it closed, decided to revive the name. He switched his Matsugane elder name with the former Tamarikidō's Nishonoseki elder name, thus allowing him to rename the stable. The former Tamarikidō, now known as Matsugane Oyakata, also joined the newly renamed stable.
