Nigambodh Ghat is a moderate-sized area on the banks of the Yamuna river coast in New Delhi, situated on the Ring Road, Delhi at the back of the historic Red Fort. It consists of a series of bathing and ceremonial stepped piers leading to the waters of the river. It is most known for being the oldest burning ghat in Delhi for performing Antyesti (Antim Sanskar), Hindu funeral rites and also one of its busiest with 50–60 pyres burning every day. It also has an electric crematorium built in the 1950s and a CNG-run crematorium was added by the Municipal corporation with manages the cremation facilities in 2006.
Etymology
It is believed that it was on this ghat during the Mahabharat era, Lord Brahma, Hindu God of Creation, had bathed and recovered his lost memory and sacred books and hence the name Nigambodh Ghat, literally realization of knowledge.
Overview
It is believed that the ghats were established by the eldest Pandava brother, Prince Yudhishthira, the king of Indraprastha. At present, the ghat area includes the largest and busiest cremation ground of New Delhi, where the Antyesti, Hindu funeral rites are carried out.

VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED
On Saturday, India reported 346,000 new coronavirus infections, highest ever in the world, taking the cumulative caseload to 16.6 million. The number of deaths also jumped to a record 2,624, taking total deaths to 190,000. With the sharp spike in number of deaths everyday due to second wave of Covid-19, crematorium grounds in Delhi struggle to keep up, forcing relatives of the victims to wait for several hours for their turn to conduct the last rites.

Mojo Story's Madan reports from Nigam Bodh Ghat, one of the largest crematoriums in Delhi, where hundreds of dead bodies are being brought in for cremation everyday. Sanjay, who works at the crematorium told Mojo Story that the funeral site had an average of around 60 bodies coming in per day for cremation before COVID but now the same has climbed up to more than 300 including both covid & non-covid. Out of which, 40-50 bodies are being cremated in CNG machines. Another worker told us that around 300 staff members are currently working here with all precautions and covid measures. In the initial phase of COVID, we had numerous grievances regarding the safety and availability of wood, small crematoriums had gone overwhelmed as they were not left with sufficient wood for funerals which resulted in queues at this ghat but everything has been sorted out now and the administration has provided us with enormous wood and facilities, he says. Wood for funerals is sold here at ₹700 per quintal and each body takes at least 3-3.5 quintals to turn into ashes. Some people are so much scared that they don't even lend a shoulder to the dead while there are some bodies which are accompanied by nearly 50 relatives. Overall this COVID crisis has turned into a reverberation of groaning humanity & warped ethos.

Masks are worn aplenty, as relatives are seen off during the Delta variant onslaught on India. How Delhi sees off its citizens on their last journeys. Notice how everyone is wearing masks in a scrupulous fashion.

Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi, the last journey and destination for many Covid stricken Indians.
Those were sad days in April-May 2021 when India ran out of firewood for its Covid deceased, thanks to the Chinese invasion of Delhi's skies with biological warfare, and the Kumbh Mela covid19 onslaught! A combination did us in, and the crematoria in Delhi were flooded with cases they could not handle. Even firewood ran out, depriving the passed of their final dignity.

Goddess Kali or the God who destroys evil, is prayed to by families of the departed when they come to Nigambodh Ghat crematorium in Delhi, with the highest footfalls having taken place during the Covid19 second wave in north India.
Kali (/ˈkɑːliː/, Sanskrit: काली, IAST: Kālī , ISO: Kālī ), also known as Kalika (Sanskrit: कालिका, Kālikā , ISO: Kālikā ), is a Hindu goddess. Kali is the chief of the Mahavidyas, a group of ten Tantric goddesses who each form a different aspect of the mother goddess Parvati.
Kali's earliest appearance is that of a destroyer of evil forces. She is the most powerful form of Shakti, and the goddess of one of the four subcategories of the Kulamārga, a category of Tantric Saivism. She destroys the evil in order to protect the innocent. Over time, Kali has been worshipped by devotional movements and tantric sects variously as the Divine Mother, Mother of the Universe, Adi Shakti, or Adi Parashakti. Shakta Hindu and Tantric sects additionally worship her as the ultimate reality or Brahman. She is also seen as the divine protector and the one who bestows moksha, or liberation. Kali is often portrayed standing or dancing on her consort, the Hindu god Shiva, who lies calm and prostrate beneath her. Kali is worshipped by Hindus throughout India and Nepal. - Wiki
