Nez Perce National Historic Park - Across Northern Idaho
The Nez Perce Native Americans had a homeland that covered parts of Idaho, Washington and Oregon. They were in fact the largest tribe on the Columbia River Plateau.
Under pressure from the American government, the tribe split into those willing to accept relocation to a reservation in Idaho and those who wanted to retain their original land. In 1877, those that refused to sign the reservation treaty began a trek across Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana, hoping to reach Canada. The U.S. Army pursued them, and there were 18 battles and skirmishes along the way. Forty miles from the Canadian border, this band of the Nez Perce were defeated.

Nez Perce National Historical Park features 38 sites in the region that are associated with the Nez Perce and their attempt to get to Canada. This slideshow focuses on sites in Northern Idaho.
The Photos (in order)
I08A0058 - Spalding Mission ruins at Spalding; Henry and Eliza Spalding established a mission in northern Idaho to minister to the Nez Perce; the Spaldings left the mission after the missionaries at nearby Whitman Mission in Washington were killed
I08A0053 - The cemetery at Spalding Mission
I08A0076 - Camas Prairie, along Highway 95 north of White Bird; the Camas Prairie was a gathering place for the Nez Perce, who harvested camas roots here for thousands of years
I08A0087 - White Bird Battlefield, along Highway 95 and Old Highway 95 north of White Bird; this was the site of the first battle between the U.S. Army and the Nez Perce band as it was heading to Canada
M08A0374 - Heart of the Beast, north of East Kamiah; the Nez Perce creation story centers on this mound, the heart of a monster that was killed by Coyote and from which the Nez Perce sprang up
N10A0114 - Coyote, Fishnet and Bear site, along Highway 12 east of Lewiston; Coyote, annoyed by a nosy black bear, hurled him up on the hillside, leaving this everlasting impression
N10A0118 - The Ant and Yellowjacket arch, along Highway 12 east of Lewiston; when the leader of the Ants and the leader of the Yellowjackets wouldn't stop fighting, Coyote turned them to rock, and they have been locked in this arch ever since
N10A0130 - St. Joseph Mission Church was built to bring Catholicism to the Nez Perce; Chief Slickpoo, a Nez Perce leader, gave permission for the site; the settlement that grew up around the church bears his name

SUMMARY
=======
The Nez Perce National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park comprising 38 sites located throughout the states of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, which included traditional aboriginal lands of the Nez Perce people. The sites are strongly associated with the resistance of Chief Joseph and his band, who in June 1877 took off from Oregon in an attempt to reach freedom in Canada and avoid being forced on to a reservation. They were pursued by U.S. Army cavalry forces and fought numerous skirmishes against them.
The park was established in 1965, and a museum was opened at the park headquarters in Spalding, Idaho, in 1983.
The 38 sites span three main ecoregions, covering a wide range of elevations and climate. Numerous animal species inhabit the park, including several that are considered sensitive.
