The town is located in south-central West Berkshire. To Newbury's north and west is the eastern stretch of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the part-ruined Donnington Castle and racehorse training (centred on Lambourn). To the south is a narrower range of hills including Walbury Hill and a few private landscape gardens and mansions such as Highclere Castle. The local economy is inter-related to that of the eastern M4 corridor, which has most of its industrial, logistical and research businesses close to Newbury, Reading and Slough.
Berkshire (/ˈbɑːrkʃər/ or /ˈbɑːrkʃɪər/, abbreviated Berks) is a county of south east England, located to the west of London. It has also been known as the Royal County of Berkshire since at least the 19th century because of the presence of Windsor Castle and was recognised as such by the Queen in 1957 and letters patent issued in 1974. Berkshire is a county of historic origin and is both a ceremonial county and a non-metropolitan county without a county council. Berkshire County Council was the main county governance from 1889 to 1998 except for the separately administered County Borough of Reading.
Berkshire soil series is the name given to a well drained loam or sandy loam soil which has developed on glacial till in parts of southern Quebec, eastern New York State and New England south to Massachusetts. It belongs to the podzol soil group and is one of the most important soils in its area of occurrence, supporting extensive forests and a fair number of farms. Many Berkshire soils lack the eluvial (E) horizon characteristic of podzols because they have a history of being cleared for cultivation.
Geology
The deep glacial till which provides the foundation of the Berkshire series contains material derived from mica schist with fragments of gneiss, granite and phyllite also present in some areas. These rocks are not high in mineral nutrients but provide enough fine-grained material to produce a loamy soil.
Agriculture
Cleared areas of the Berkshire series support a livestock industry with an emphasis on dairying. Grasses, legumes and silagecorn are raised for cattle food. These crops are likely to need lime and fertilizer for optimum growth. Potatoes are also grown; they are well adapted to the Berkshire's natural acidity. Many Berkshire soils, however, are too rough and stony for easy cultivation and have been allowed to revert to forest.
In the United States, the American Berkshire Association, established in 1875, gives pedigrees only to pigs directly imported from established English herds or to those tracing directly back to such imported animals. The pig is also bred in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, under the trademarked name Kagoshima Kurobuta (かごしま黒豚, lit. Kagoshima black pig).
Culinary uses
Berkshire pork, prized for juiciness, flavour and tenderness, is pink-hued and heavily marbled. Its high fat content makes it suitable for long cooking and high-temperature cooking.

Newbury. Town. Berkshire. Walking from the clocktower to Market Place. Sat 27.08.2016.
While on a visit to Newbury on Saturday (I used to live there), I did a bit of video as it's changed so much over the years. I thought this will be a bit of history for the future, as I don't doubt it will look all different again in the coming years.

Newbury Walking Tour
Newbury is a market town in the county of Berkshire, England, which is home to the administrative headquarters of West Berkshire Council.
The town centre around its large market square retains a rare medieval Cloth Hall, an adjoining half timbered granary, and the 15th-century St Nicolas Church, along with 17th- and 18th-century listed buildings. As well as being home to Newbury Racecourse, it is the headquarters of Vodafone and software company Micro Focus International.
There was a Mesolithic settlement at Newbury. Artefacts were recovered from the Greenham Dairy Farm in 1963, and the Faraday Road site in 2002. Additional material was found in excavations along the route of the Newbury Bypass.

Newbury.Berkshire. Driving Monks Lane, Pinchington Lane. June 1986
A piece of video I've managed to retrieve from an old VHS tape of mine. It shows driving from the Andover Road, along Monks Lane, Pinchington Lane, Greenham Road and into The Nightingales. The quality isn't brilliant, but it's good enough to see how things have changed, particularly along Pinchington Lane.

Another piece retrieved from an old VHS tape of driving into Newbury from the Andover Road, along St Johns Road, Ring Road, Cheap Street and Market Street leading to the ramp up to the Kennet Centre service yard. You can see Gowrings is still there, as is the Multi Story Car Park. Sorry the quality isn't brilliant though!

Newbury was founded late in the 11th century following the Norman conquest as a new borough, hence its name. Although there are references to the borough that predate the Domesday Survey it is not mentioned by name in the survey. However, its existence within the manor of Ulvritone is evident from the massive rise in value of that manor at a time when most manors were worth less than in Saxon times. In 1086 the Domesday Book[5] assesses the borough as having land for 12 ploughs, 2 mills, woodland for 25 pigs, 11 villeins (resident farmhands, unfree peasant who owed his lord labour services), 11 bordars (unfree peasants with less land than villans/villeins), and 51 enclosures (private parks) rendering 70s 7d.
Doubt has been cast over the existence of Newbury Castle, but the town did have royal connections and was visited a number of times by King John and Henry III while hunting in the area.
