Ilya Repin at Tretyakov Gallery | Exhibitions | Showcase
He depicted Russia during a time of upheaval through the eyes of its people from its wealthy classes to its poorest. With expressive brushstrokes and great attention to detail, 19th-century painter Ilya Repin captured the nation's transformations during one of its most turbulent times depicting everything from the hard lives of peasants to the fate of revolutionary activists. And to celebrate Repin's one hundred 75th birthday, his masterpieces have been collected and put on display under one roof for the first time in 25 years.

Tretyakov family bought the house in Lavrushinsky Lane in 1851. But the history of this property is traceable back to the end of the XVII century. Even then, there were built stone chambers that were rebuilt over the following centuries. Kologrivovs, the owners at that time, also rebuilt the chambers in the second half of the XVIII century.
Pavel Tretyakov acquired the first two paintings of Russian artists: - “Skirmish with Finnish Smugglers” by Basil Khudiakov and "Temptation" by Nikolai Schilder in 1856. That was a foundation of his great collection. There was not enough space for a constantly growing collection after some time. Pavel attached to the southwest corner of the main house additional housing where and put his gallery in 1872.

MOSCOW RUSSIAN ART | Tretyakov Gallery & Amazing Food!
On our last full day in Moscow, Katie and I visited the Tretyakov Gallery, it was on of the Russian Museums you must see when in Moscow. They house some of the most well known artifacts and paintings in all of Russia, featuring Andrei Rublev and the Holy Trinity!
The Holy Trinity is one of the most famous and prestigious pieces of art in Russian history.
After, we visited some of the best Moscow food stops we loved from the earlier days on our trip.
It was a bit of a mixed day running around the city enjoying our last day at a relaxed pace, but we had an amazing time and truly loved our trip to Russia.
We look forward to returning one day!
Check back again next for our series on Italy and Greece! Two new countries to come!!

Pavel Tretyakov donated his collection, which included at that time 1287 paintings, 518 drawings and 9 sculptures of Russian artists XVIII-XIX centuries, as well as 75 paintings belonging to his brother Sergei Mikhailovich, who died recently, to the city of Moscow In 1892. Pavel himself became a lifelong trustee of the gallery. Even after his dеаth Tretyakov house was rebuilt and adapted to the needs of the gallery in 1899-1900. Buildings on Lavrushinsky Lane were united by the new facade designed by the artist Viktor Vasnetsov two years later. This is when the familiar look of the Tretyakov Gallery appeared.
I.E. Grabar was appointed a trustee of the gallery in 1913. He became a director of the gallery after the Revolution. "Tretyakov Gallery" was added by several neighboring estates, including closed by the time the church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachev in the 1920s and early 1930s. The architect Shchusev built additional two-storey building on the north side of the main building, which rooms were soon incorporated into the main route of exposure in 1936.
The new depository and museum building construction started in Bolshoy Tolmachevskiy Alley in the mid -1980s. Unfortunately, the new exhibition building was not a very unsuccessful in terms of architecture. The main body was reconstructed simultaneously while maintaining its historic appearance. All work was completed by 1995. The church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachev - now it is the home church - museum of the Tretyakov Gallery was included in the general museum ensemble. Here, in particular, is one of the most venerated relics of the Russian Orthodox Church - the miraculous Icon of the Vladimir Mother of God.
Currently, the gallery’s collection counts more than 170,000 works of art. And it is not only one of the most famous museums in the world, but also a major research and restoration center.
