New Lanark is a village on the River Clyde, approximately 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometres) from Lanark, in Lanarkshire, and some 40km southeast of Glasgow, Scotland. It was founded in 1786 by David Dale, who built cotton mills and housing for the mill workers. Dale built the mills there in a brief partnership with the English inventor and entrepreneur Richard Arkwright to take advantage of the water power provided by the only waterfalls on the River Clyde. Under the ownership of a partnership that included Dale's son-in-law, Robert Owen, a Welsh philanthropist and social reformer, New Lanark became a successful business and an epitome of utopian socialism as well as an early example of a planned settlement and so an important milestone in the historical development of urban planning.
The New Lanark mills operated until 1968. After a period of decline, the New Lanark Conservation Trust (NLCT) was founded in 1974 (now known as the New Lanark Trust (NLT)) to prevent demolition of the village. By 2006 most of the buildings have been restored and the village has become a major tourist attraction. It is one of six UNESCOWorld Heritage Sites in Scotland and an Anchor Point of ERIH - The European Route of Industrial Heritage.
Lanark (/ˈlænərk/; Scottish Gaelic:Lannraig,Scots:Lanrik) is a small town in the central belt of Scotland. The name is believed to come from the CumbricLanerc meaning "clear space, glade".
Lanark is traditionally the county town of Lanarkshire, though there are several larger towns in the county. Lanark railway station and coach station have frequent services to Glasgow. There is little industry in Lanark and some residents commute to work in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Its shops serve the local agricultural community and surrounding villages. There is a large modern livestock auction market on the outskirts of the town.
History
Lanark has served as an important market town since medieval times, and King David I made it a Royal Burgh in 1140, giving it certain mercantile privileges relating to government and taxation. King David I realised that greater prosperity could result from encouraging trade. He decided to create a chain of new towns across Scotland. These would be centres of Norman civilisation in a largely Celtic country, and would be established in such a way as to encourage the development of trade within their area. These new towns were to be known as Burghs. Bastides were established in France for much the same reason.
Lanark, subtitled A Life in Four Books, is the first novel of Scottish writer Alasdair Gray. Written over a period of almost thirty years, it combines realist and dystopiansurrealist depictions of his home city of Glasgow.
Lanark comprises four books, arranged in the order Three, One, Two, Four (there is also a Prologue before Book One, and an Epilogue four chapters before the end of the book). In the Epilogue, the author explains this by saying that "I want Lanark to be read in one order but eventually thought of in another", and that the epilogue itself is "too important" to go at the end (p.483).

New Lanark - UNESCO World Heritage Site
A tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site at New Lanark, in Scotland UK. New Lanark was a model village and planned community to house workers of the nearby textile mills. The founder provided free education and healthcare to his workers' children, good clean housing and reasonably priced goods in the shop. Many of the current labour conditions we take for granted can be traced back to New Lanark!

Day Trip: New Lanark!
A wee while ago I took my friend Ashleigh to Dean Village and she told me if I liked Dean Village that I would love New Lanark! So, on her next day off work, off we went on a day trip.

New Lanark: Robert Owen's Utopianism and the Latter Day Saints
At New Lanark, Scotland, Andrew Bolton talks about Robert Owen — an early industrialist and socialist activist — whose ideas and Utopian experiments here and at New Harmony in the US directly inspired Sidney Rigdon to include communitarianism in his attempts to build a Christian Zion. After Rigdon's movement merged with Joseph Smith's restored Church of Christ, communitarian experiments were written into the DNA of the Latter Day Saint movement and they continue in Community of Christ.
