Join us as we escape to The New Forest National Park and take on a self-drive safari through one of England's most unique landscapes.
We begin our day at the village of Brockenhurst where we treat ourselves to delicious breakfast and spend some time watching the cars (and bikes) splash their way through the village's iconic ford before it's our turn to do just that as we start the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive - one of the New Forest's top things to do.
This drive sees us wind through endless moorlands and forests with stops a long the way to explore some of the most magical places on foot. Our first stop is Whitefield Moor, with its gentle rolling hills covered in purple heather as far as the eye can see. We also get our first glimpse of the free-roaming New Forest Ponies. NEW FOREST WALK ALONG THE DOCKENS WATER (NEW FOREST NATIONAL PARK) (4K)
In this episode of my series “ New Forest Walks”, I take a 6 mile linear walk along the course of the Dockens Water – a stream that flows East to West from Fritham to the River Avon in Hampshire. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I start my journey at the source of the Dockens Water, just North of the village of Fritham in the New Forest. The stream soon goes through private land in Fritham & so I re-join it at the Southern end of the village as it passes by the South Bentley Inclosure.
The next section is fairly straight forward as it is easy to follow the stream as it passes by Anses Wood, Holly Hatch Inclosure & Broomy Inclosure.
At Woodford Bottom I have to make a short detour awy from the stream to bypass private land and re-join it again at the foot of Great Bot...

NEW FOREST WALK at EYEWORTH POND, FRITHAM (NEW FOREST NATIONAL PARK) [4K]
This is another video in my series “New Forest Walks” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the Fritham in the North of the Forest (about halfway between Fordingbridge in the West & Cadnam in the East) and explore the surrounding area.
I park my car at the Forestry Commission car park on the edge of the village and start my 5.5 mile circular route by heading north to the beautiful Eyeworth pond. The pond was originally made in the late 1800's to provide water for a gunpowder factory which closed in the 1920's.
After exploring the Irons Well at the end of the pond I follow a gravel track up towards Longcross Plain to another pond that is popular with ponies & cattle. I get to see some lovely young donkeys before heading further North to Pipers Wait – the highest po...

The second half of the drive sees us continue on to the Bolderwood Ornamental Drive beginning at the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary where we are greeted by more ponies before heading off in to the forest once more in the search of deer - and we are not disappointed! We end our day at Cadmans Pool, a well-known watering hole for the wildlife and we get to witness those famous New Forest Ponies taking a drink.
Is this the best drive in the UK? Well it certainly is one of the most enchanting!

At Woodford Bottom I have to make a short detour awy from the stream to bypass private land and re-join it again at the foot of Great Bottom.
However, the course of the stream then passes through Linwood Bog …. which is impossible to walk through! So I take another detour (passing by The Red Shoot Inn) and follow the road to Moyles Court. I was able to follow a footpath back to the Dockens Water before Moyles Court but I soon had to return to the road as once again I came across bog.
After a quick stop at the sandpit at Rockford (for Logan to have a run), I picked up the Dockens Water one more time at Moyles Court and followed it out of the New Forest National Park to the edge of the Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve.
Whilst the Dockens Water continues on, through the lakes, under the Ringwood to Fordingbridge road and on to the water meadows beyond Blashford Farm and finally into the River Avon – much of that remaining course is on private land.
So I finished my journey (to follow the course of the stream) at the Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve and headed back to Rockford to my final destination – The Alice Lisle pub.
I would not recommend trying to follow the entire course of the Dockens Water due to A) sections of bog & B) sections of private land. However, I certainly would recommend a circular walk from the Royal Oak pub at Fritham to the High Post Inn (just beyond Woodford Bottom) and back (making a roughly 6 mile walk).

I get to see some lovely young donkeys before heading further North to Pipers Wait – the highest point in the New Forest.
My journey then takes me Westwards, following the old New Forest boundary (also the Hampshire / Wiltshire boundary) alongside Franchises Wood until I get to Bramshaw Telegraph. There, after investigating a natural spring and passing near the source of the Latchmore Brook, I head South through the wonderful Eyeworth Wood and back to Fritham.
Note: A number of sources on the internet, including Wikipedia & Historic England, suggest that Fritham lodge dates back to 1671 (as I indicate in the video). However I see that in the photograph that I have put up in the video of the plaque below the gable on the house (which looks recently painted & refurbished) gives a date of 1635.
