New Covent Garden Market is the largest wholesale fruit, vegetable, and flower market in the United Kingdom. Located in Nine Elms, London, the Market covers a site of 57 acres (23ha) and is home to approximately 200 fruit, vegetable, and flower companies. The Market serves 40% of the fruit and vegetables eaten outside of the home in London and provides ingredients to many of London's top restaurants, hotels, schools, prisons, hospitals, and catering businesses.
The Flower Market, which offers an extensive range of flowers, plants, foliages, sundries, and interior decorations from the UK and from around the globe, is visited by 75% of florists in London, many of whom place morning orders and return to restock during the day as needed. The Flower Market wholesalers are open from 04:00 to 10:00 Monday to Saturday and the Fruit & Vegetable Market wholesalers trade from around 00:00 - 06:00 Monday to Saturday.
A farmers' market (also farmers market) is a physical retail market featuring foods sold directly by farmers to consumers. Farmers' markets typically consist of booths, tables or stands, outdoors or indoors, where farmers sell fruits, vegetables, meats, and sometimes prepared foods and beverages. They are distinguished from public markets, which are generally housed in permanent structures, open year-round, and offer a variety of non-farmer/producer vendors, packaged foods and non-food products.
Farmers' markets exist worldwide and reflect their local culture and economy. Their size ranges from a few stalls to several city blocks. In some cultures, live animals, imported delicacies unavailable locally, and personal goods and crafts are sold.
History
The current concept of a farmers' market is similar to past concepts, but different in relation to other forms – as aspects of consumer retailing, overall, continue to shift over time. Similar forms existed before the Industrial age but, were often part of broader markets, where suppliers of food and other goods gathered to retail their wares. Trading posts began a shift toward retailers who sold others' products more than their own. General stores and grocery stores continued that specialization trend in retailing, optimizing the consumer experience, while abstracting it further from production and production's growing complexities.
Covent Garden (/ˈkɒvənt/) is a district in London on the eastern fringes of the West End, between St. Martin's Lane and Drury Lane. It is associated with the former fruit and vegetable market in the central square, now a popular shopping and tourist site, and the Royal Opera House, which is also known as "Covent Garden". The district is divided by the main thoroughfare of Long Acre, north of which is given over to independent shops centred on Neal's Yard and Seven Dials, while the south contains the central square with its street performers and most of the elegant buildings, theatres and entertainment facilities, including the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and the London Transport Museum.
Blue plaques have been created for each of the 44 houses, recording highlights of the residents' history such as the tailor, Frederick Scriven, who lived at number 9 for 47 years and whose assistant was hanged for murder in 1876.
On 3 April 2017, Covent Garden's famous flower market moved to its third location -- this one just down the road from the market in Nine Elms. We got up very early in the morning to chat to traders about the art of selling flowers. It turns out they've got some salubrious clients...

Bringing France to New Covent Garden Market with The French Garden
We teamed up with New Covent Garden Market wholesaler The French Garden to visit Brittany, France, to film the journey of produce from the grower all the way to the chef's kitchen here in London.
In our video we follow the story of artichokes, cauliflowers and tomatoes grown on the French coastline, which are transported to Rungis wholesale market in Paris and then on to The French Garden here at the Market.
Back at the Market we join chef Alan Bird, Bird of Smithfield, who hand picks the finest ingredients to take back to his restaurant, where he transforms the produce into three stunning dishes.
