Vote count protest, Electoral Institute and PAN party comment
(7 Jul 2012) Counting the votes in Mexico's presidential election concluded on Friday, showing a 6.6 per cent winning margin for Enrique Pena Nieto of PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party), and triggering a series of claims of vote fixing.
The final count by the national electoral authority, which included a ballot-by-ballot recount at more than half the country's polling stations, showed Pena Nieto with 38.21 percent of the vote.
Leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador got 31.59 percent, and almost immediately said he would file a legal challenge.
Josefina Vazquez Mota of the conservative National Action Party (PAN) polled 25.41 percent and the small New Alliance Party 2.29 percent, barely passing the two-percent barrier needed to preserve the party's place on future ballots.

STORYLINE:
Mexico's former ruling party has won the support of two of the country's minor parties, building momentum for what many see as an inevitable return to power.
The Institutional Revolutionary Party signed a pact on Thursday with the union-backed New Alliance party and with Mexico's small Green Party.
On Thursday Institutional Revolutionary Party leader Humberto Moreira, expressed confidence that the new alliance will triumph in the upcoming presidential elections.
"I know well that together we will get electoral triumph on July 2012," Moreira said.
The two smaller parties are now all but certain to back the PRI's presidential candidate, widely assumed to be Enrique Pena Nieto, a former governor of the state of Mexico.
The PRI, who ruled the country for 70 years was defeated by the National Action Party in the presidential race in 2000 with the triumph of Vicente Fox, followed by current president Felipe Calderon.

Gustavo Madero, National Action Party Chairman, said on Friday his party had also filed several complaints.
Outside the Federal Electoral Institute headquarters in Mexico City, dozens of demonstrators, mostly students, held a protest to demand that election authorities hold a full recount of the election votes.
Protesters brought a mock coffin to represent Mexican democracy as people placed flowers on it. They said they do not trust the official numbers, and believe Pena Nieto did not win the election.
But electoral observers from civil organisations said on Friday they believed the election results could be trusted, despite "minor irregularities."
Much of the dispute centres on a coupon scheme, with Pena Nieto supporters reportedly handing out vouchers for groceries, which opponents say was an attempt at bribing the voters.
