Nervous Breakdown is the debut EP by the American hardcore punk band Black Flag, released in the last half of January 1979 through SST Records. It was the label's first release.
Recording history
The recording was financed by Greg Ginn with proceeds he had earned from his mail-order ham radio electronics business, Solid State Transmitters (SST). Through Spot, then an apprentice engineer whom Ginn had already known from living in Hermosa Beach, California, the band found Media Art, a studio that had recently completed construction.
The recording was originally supposed to be released through Bomp! Records, but the band felt that the label was taking too long to put the record out. Eventually the band took the master rights back, and Ginn put some more earnings from his ham radio business, located a pressing plant in the phone book, and co-founded SST Records with Black Flag bassist Chuck Dukowski, borrowing the label's name from his business.
It is commonly misconstrued that Spot was the producer and engineer of Nervous Breakdown. In his sleeve notes for the 1982 outtakes anthology Everything Went Black, Spot pointed out that as an apprentice engineer, his involvement in the sessions was limited to setting up microphones during the tracking sessions, and doing rough mixes for the band to hear.
Mental breakdown (also known as a nervous breakdown) is a general term for an acute, time-limited psychiatric disorder that manifests primarily as severe stress-induced depression, anxiety, or dissociation in a previously functional individual, to the extent that they are no longer able to function on a day-to-day basis until the disorder is resolved. A nervous breakdown is defined by its temporary nature, and often closely tied to psychological burnout, severe overwork, sleep deprivation, and similar stressors, which may combine to temporarily overwhelm an individual with otherwise sound mental functions.
Definition
The terms "nervous breakdown" and "mental breakdown" have not been formally defined through a medical diagnostic system such as the DSM-IV or ICD-10, and are nearly absent from current scientific literature regarding mental illness. Although "nervous breakdown" does not necessarily have a rigorous or static definition, surveys of laypersons suggest that the term refers to a specific acute time-limited reactive disorder, involving symptoms such as anxiety or depression, usually precipitated by external stressors. Many health experts today refer to a nervous breakdown as a "modern mental health crisis."
Nervous breakdown, or mental breakdown, is an acute, time-limited phase of a specific disorder that presents primarily with features of depression or anxiety.
Nervous breakdown is a non-medical term and may also refer to:
Bret Love at AllMusic wrote in retrospect that Nervous Breakdown showcased "an improved lyrical maturity among all three members" on a record that was "a frenzied, fast-paced roller coaster ride of originality that doesn't let up until the last song ends."
Have you ever found yourself in a period of intense mental distress? That’s what a mental breakdown, also known as a nervous breakdown can feel like. Some experience emotional breakdown progressively, while others feel it very suddenly. You may even find yourself unable to perform daily tasks due to the feeling of being overwhelmed. Unlike an anxiety disorder, a mental breakdown can occur at any point in one's life. We also did a video of emotional numbness in a previous video here: https://youtu.be/k3cflxGTsn4

Whatever Happened to Nervous Breakdowns? While this was never an official diagnosis, just a popular euphemism in the days when mental illness carried a huge stigma, shrinks say they frequently hear the term from patients who see it as a convenient catch-all for the inability to function due to psychological stress.

"The term lives on in our culture, maybe because it seems to capture so well what people feel or go through when they are distressed," says one therapist. Melinda Beck has details on Lunch Break.

Have you ever just felt overwhelmed by a stressful situation? Like a tsunami of problems about to crash over you? You might be experiencing a nervous breakdown. A nervous breakdown is a loss of the ability to function in everyday life. While a nervous breakdown isn’t classified as an actual psychological term, nor is it a mental health disorder, experiencing it can be debilitating.

This video answers the question: What is a nervous breakdown? Does the construct of a nervous breakdown have diagnostic value? The term nervous breakdown is used in the popular culture and is considered a colloquial. Most mental health counselors do not interpret the term as having any diagnostic value, however, a study looking at this term found that it does align with several technical terms and mental disorders used by clinicians.

NervousBreakdown EP (1979) ... They’ve even got a jazz cut, with “Obliteration” serving as your occasional reminder of the band’s true love of making music to confuse young punks who first fell in love with Nervous Breakdown.
Those first two Ride EPs, bought in the dawn of the world’s morning and the third, which soundtracked a sometimes beautiful autumn, were shelved and remained unplayed for twenty odd years ...It’s Ride at their messiest, on their 19th nervous breakdown.
