Neo-Assyrian Empire
The Neo-Assyrian Empire was an Iron Age Mesopotamian empire, in existence between 911 and 612 BC. The Assyrians perfected early techniques of imperial rule, many of which became standard in later empires. Following the reforms of Tiglath-Pileser III in the 8th century BC, Assyria emerged as the most powerful state of the Ancient Near East, eclipsing Babylonia and Egypt. The Neo-Assyrian Empire succeeded the Middle Assyrian Empire (1365-1050 BC) of the Late Bronze Age. During this period, Aramaic was also made an official language of the empire, alongside the Akkadian language.
Upon the death of Ashurbanipal in 627 BC, the empire began to disintegrate due to a brutal and unremitting series of civil wars in Assyria proper. In 616 BC, Cyaxares king of the Medes and Persians made alliances with Nabopolassar ruler of the Babylonians and Chaldeans, and also the Scythians and Cimmerians against Assyria. At the battle at Harran (609 BC) the Babylonians and Medes defeated an Assyrian-Egyptian alliance, after which Assyria largely ceased to exist as an independent state, although the Assyrian army and remnants of its administration continued to hold out around Carchemish until 605 BC, and around Dur-Katlimmu until perhaps as late as 599 BC. Half a century later, Babylonia and Assyria became provinces of the Persian Empire.

A Short History of Assyria and the Neo-Assyrian Empire
Assyria has a long history, beginning in northern Mesopotamia and then expanding during the Neo-Assyrian Empire from Mesopotamia through Asia Minor, and down through Egypt. The empire began in the city of Ashur and went through many different stages of expansion and sacking by a number of kingdoms including the Mittani, the Babylonians and the Hittites. The Neo-Assyrian Empire, also known as the Late Empire, is the period of the greatest expansion of the Empire, and it’s where their reputation has come from for ruthlessness and cruelty. I know that it can be difficult to keep up with many of the political and historical events that make up over 1400 years of documented ancient Assyrian history. To help you out, I’ve created this summary to give you a general idea of the role that the kingdoms and empires of Assyria played in the history of the ancient world, especially the Near East.
It's an incredible story of how the people of a relatively insignificant city-state became one of the greatest superpowers of their time. My hope is that after watching this video, you'll not only have a general understanding of Assyrian (mostly political) history, but also be somewhat familiar with a few of Assyria's great kings such as Tiglath-Pileser, Sargon II, Sennacherib, Esarhaddon, Ashurbanipal and others.

Assyria has a long history, beginning in northern Mesopotamia and then expanding during the Neo-Assyrian Empire from Mesopotamia through Asia Minor, and down through Egypt. The empire began in the city of Ashur and went through many different stages of expansion and sacking by a number of kingdoms including the Mittani, the Babylonians and the Hittites.
The Neo-Assyrian Empire, also known as the Late Empire, is the period of the greatest expansion of the Empire, and it’s where their reputation has come from for ruthlessness and cruelty. Under the reign of king Adad Nirari II, he was able to recapture the lands lost during the Middle Empire, including the important region of Eber Nari, and their borders were secured as their expansions continued. Adad Nirari II conquered Babylon, but he learnt from his predecessors and, instead of plundering the city, he entered into a peace treaty with the king by marrying each other's daughters. This meant that Babylon became a powerful ally rather than a problem to be dealt with.
The Neo-Assyrian empire continued to grow as it became more cohesive with the spread of the worship of Ashur and the assimilation of conquered people. The region expanded up the coast of the Mediterranean where they received tribute from the Phoenician cities of Tyre and Sidon and defeated the Armenian kingdom of Urartu under Shalmaneser III. The expansion of the empire ceased after Shalmaneser III with his successor Shamshi Adad V fighting with his brother for control and inciting civil war - which was eventually put down.

The Neo-Assyrian empire continued to grow as it became more cohesive with the spread of the worship of Ashur and the assimilation of conquered people. The region expanded up the coast of the Mediterranean where they received tribute from the Phoenician cities of Tyre and Sidon and defeated the Armenian kingdom of Urartu under Shalmaneser III. The expansion of the empire ceased after Shalmaneser III with his successor Shamshi Adad V fighting with his brother for control and inciting civil war - which was eventually put down.

With an army second to none, an effective cavalry, and a sophisticated administration, the Assyrian Empire held sway over the entire Near East in the mid-7th century BC. It was the largest, best-organized state the ancient world had ever seen, appearing unattainable and invincible to its enemies. But how did it become such a dominant power? Arguably, four major factors gave the Assyrian army an edge over the other city-states of Mesopotamia: An unmatched propaganda of terror, expertise in siege warfare, adept administration, and, finally being the first major power in history to utilize a regular cavalry. Now, to understand all this properly, let’s quickly backtrack and have a brief look at how Assyria rose to power.

I know that it can be difficult to keep up with many of the political and historical events that make up over 1400 years of documented ancient Assyrian history. To help you out, I’ve created this summary to give you a general idea of the role that the kingdoms and empires of Assyria played in the history of the ancient world, especially the Near East.
It's an incredible story of how the people of a relatively insignificant city-state became one of the greatest superpowers of their time. Assyria has a long history, beginning in northern Mesopotamia and then expanding during the Neo-Assyrian Empire from Mesopotamia through Asia Minor, and down through Egypt. The empire began in the city of Ashur and went through many different stages of expansion and sacking by a number of kingdoms including the Mittani, the Babylonians and the Hittites.
The Neo-Assyrian Empire, also known as the Late Empire, is the period of the greatest expansion of the Empire, and it’s where their reputation has come from for ruthlessness and cruelty. Under the reign of king Adad Nirari II, he was able to recapture the lands lost during the Middle Empire, including the important region of Eber Nari, and their borders were secured as their expansions continued. Adad Nirari II conquered Babylon, but he learnt from his predecessors and, instead of plundering the city, he entered into a peace treaty with the king by marrying each other's daughters. This meant that Babylon became a powerful ally rather than a problem to be dealt with.

Neo-Assyrian Empire
The Neo-Assyrian Empire was an Iron Age Mesopotamian empire, in existence between 911 and 612 BC. The Assyrians perfected early techniques of imperial rule, many of which became standard in later empires. Following the reforms of Tiglath-Pileser III in the 8th century BC, Assyria emerged as the most powerful state of the Ancient Near East, eclipsing Babylonia and Egypt. The Neo-Assyrian Empire succeeded the Middle Assyrian Empire (1365-1050 BC) of the Late Bronze Age. During this period, Aramaic was also made an official language of the empire, alongside the Akkadian language.
Upon the death of Ashurbanipal in 627 BC, the empire began to disintegrate due to a brutal and unremitting series of civil wars in Assyria proper. In 616 BC, Cyaxares king of the Medes and Persians made alliances with Nabopolassar ruler of the Babylonians and Chaldeans, and also the Scythians and Cimmerians against Assyria. At the battle at Harran (609 BC) the Babylonians and Medes defeated an Assyrian-Egyptian alliance, after which Assyria largely ceased to exist as an independent state, although the Assyrian army and remnants of its administration continued to hold out around Carchemish until 605 BC, and around Dur-Katlimmu until perhaps as late as 599 BC. Half a century later, Babylonia and Assyria became provinces of the Persian Empire.
