The Barents Sea (Russian:Баренцево море, Barentsevo MoreNorwegian:Barentshavet) is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean, located off the northern coasts of Norway and Russia with vast majority of it lying in Russian territorial waters. Known in the Middle Ages as the Murman Sea, the sea takes its current name from the Dutch navigator Willem Barentsz.
It is a rather shallow shelf sea, with an average depth of 230 metres (750ft), and is an important site for both fishing and hydrocarbon exploration. The Barents Sea is bordered by the Kola Peninsula to the south, the shelf edge towards the Norwegian Sea to the west, and the archipelagos of Svalbard to the northwest, Franz Josef Land to the north east and Novaya Zemlya to the east. Novaya Zemlya, an extension of the northern part of the Ural Mountains, separates the Barents Sea from the Kara Sea.
Geography
The southern half of the Barents Sea, including the ports of Murmansk (Russia) and Vardø (Norway) remain ice-free year round due to the warm North Atlantic drift. In September, the entire Barents Sea is more or less completely ice-free. Until the Winter War (1939–40), Finland's territory also reached to the Barents Sea, with the harbor at Petsamo being Finland's only ice-free winter harbor.
On New Years Eve 1942, a battle in the Barents Sea took place between a British arctic convoy and a larger German fleet that included the cruisers Hipper and Lützow. The results of this was so shocking that the German Surface Fleet was threatened with being abolished. So what happened? Let's find out!

The Battle of the Barents Sea
Thanks for watching, remember to like & subscribe!
The Battle of the Barents Sea was a World War II naval engagement on 31 December 1942 between warships of the German Navy (Kriegsmarine) and British ships escorting convoy JW 51B to Kola Inlet in the USSR. The action took place in the Barents Sea north of North Cape, Norway. The German raiders' failure to inflict significant losses on the convoy infuriated Hitler, who ordered that German naval strategy would henceforth concentrate on the U-boat fleet rather than surface ships.

The Hunt for Elektron: When Norwegian officers boarded a Russian trawler, the last thing they expected was to be abducted. But for 5 days, they were held prisoner while the navy chased the ship.

"We closed all the hatches and prepared for war", states Valery Jarantsev, captain of the Russian trawler, Elektron. When two Norwegian officials caught his ship illegally fishing, he defied their orders to return to port. Instead, he abducted the Norwegian officials and made a mad dash for Russia. "He was quite determined. He didn't show any signs of surrendering", recalls abducted officer Henning Thune. Another Russian trawler came to Elektron's aid, preventing it being intercepted by the coast guard and the ship entered Russian waters. But Jarantsev is now being prosecuted by his own government, after they reached a deal with Norway. He faces up to seven years in prison.
