The states with the largest Navajo populations are Arizona (140,263) and New Mexico (108,306). Over three-quarters of the Navajo population reside in these two states.
History
Early history
Until contact with Pueblos and the Spanish, the Navajo were largely hunters and gatherers. The tribe adopted crop farming techniques from the Pueblo peoples, growing mainly corn, beans, and squash. When the Spanish arrived, the Navajo began herding sheep and goats as a main source of trade and food, with meat becoming an essential component of the Navajo diet. Sheep also became a form of currency and status symbol among the Navajo based on the overall quantity of herds a family maintained. In addition, the practice of spinning and weaving wool into blankets and clothing became common and eventually developed into a form of highly valued artistic expression.

Navajo Teachings: The Truth About Turquoise
The legends say... turquoise is meant to remind us of our existence in the Blue World.
The Blue World is the second in the teachings of the four worlds. It has a few different names.
The Second World, The Blue World, The Spirit World, and The World With No Surface.
Turquoise is said to offer protection.
To identify to the Holy People, the Five-Fingered beings who know where they come from.
Navajo Historian, Wally Brown, uses his necklace to teach about the symbolism of turquoise.
Wally has had his necklace for decades. It was given to him as payment for some presentations he gave long ago.

How the US poisoned Navajo Nation
The biggest radioactive spill in US history.
As World War Two was ending, the growing nuclear arms race put the US in need of uranium. It turned to Navajo Nation, where the uranium mining industry thrived for four decades -- but left disease, pollution and the biggest radioactive spill in US history.
That spill in Church Rock, New Mexico upended the lives of nearby residents, who had to grapple with toxic water, livestock and a lifetime of illnesses. Now, they are still waiting for it to be cleaned up.
Note: The headline for this piece has been updated.

There is a lot of fear that follows people around. This fear grows and eventually paralyzes. In Navajo teachings many outsiders want to know about witchcraft and the dark things.
For our Navajo people this is a topic that is avoided. There are only certain times or places that such things are generally discussed.
But what it comes down to is fear. This is how witchcraft operates. Fear makes the victims easy to control and harm.
Yes it is very real, probably more real than anyone wants to mention.
In this video Navajo Historian Wally Brown teaches about this topic and shares the key to protecting against such practices.

"When hearing the old ones pray... it was like the creator was right there"
Being able to sit with the old people is a gift that many of our Navajo people didn't get. And today it is evident.
Many struggle and find themselves in bad situations. These teachings when followed helped our Navajo people survive for many generations.
But what will the future hold when these teachings are no longer commonplace?
