Indonesia is a big archipelago, consists of more than 17.000 islands. With that many islands, Indonesia consists of more than 1000 tribes.
Some tribes are bigger than the other, and some tribes are considered as sub-tribes of the bigger tribes.
Each of these tribes has their own uniqueness and cultures, which contribute to Indonesia’s rich cultures. Before Youth Pledge at 28 October 1928, some tribes considered themselves as individual countries.
However, after Youth Pledge, most tribes united and called themselves “Indonesians”. After Independence, more tribes united into Indonesia, and forming what we know as Indonesia now.

Indonesian Chinese make up just three per cent of the country’s population, but they have played a prominent role in its history. A driving force behind Indonesia’s economic growth, they have also been the target of violent riots and xenophobic sentiment, with many leaving the country where their ancestors have lived for generations. Although they are allowed to express their ethnicity and culture openly again, a resurgence of nationalist sentiments have brought their place in Indonesian society back into question.

Batak tradition continues.
Batak, the most endangered indigenous tribe of Palawan living in the northern part of Puerto Princesa City and Roxas, Palawan numbering to around 500 and less than a hundred are still clinging to their cultural traditions. They are nomadic people living beside a river where natural resources are still abundant for a period of time and transfer to another. They roam around and along the rivers of Mauyon, Babuyan, Tanabag, Tagnaya, Langogan, and Caramay.
The head of the tribe Pa’dao at around 90 years old is afraid of losing their heritage. Continuous influx of migration and destruction of the forest are the culprits.
The yearly ritual they used to do is called “Lambay”. It is a practice of prayers through “Pagdiwata” and dances before they start gathering wild honey and plant rice five to fifteen days moving from one place to another in places where they dwell before hoping for a bountiful harvest.
“Lambay” 2016 was held with the support of the following;
Provincial Government of Palawan through Governor Jose Chaves Alvarez and staff, Kent and Wilma Rudebo, Dinggot Conde-Prieto, Davi John Palo, Ermie Aguirre, Gabriel Sagarino and company, Wine Orlido and family, and Pedrito Ensomo, photographer/coordinator.
Their environment now is almost depleted of natural resources where they depend their living.
