National Security Archive
The National Security Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-governmental, non-profit research and archival institution located on the campus of the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1985 to check rising government secrecy, the National Security Archive is an investigative journalism center, open government advocate, international affairs research institute, and is the largest repository of declassified U.S. documents outside of the federal government. The National Security Archive has spurred the declassification of more than 10 million pages of government documents by being the leading non-profit user of the U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), filing a total of more than 50,000 FOIA and declassification requests in its nearly 30-year history.
Organization history and accolades
Journalists and historians founded the National Security Archive in 1985 to enrich research and public debate about national security policy. The National Security Archive continues to challenge national security secrecy by advocating for open government, utilizing the FOIA to compel the release of previously secret government documents, and analyzing and publishing its collections for the public.

National security
National security is a concept that a government, along with its parliaments, should protect the state and its citizens against all kind of "national" crises through a variety of power projections, such as political power, diplomacy, economic power, military might, and so on.
The concept developed mostly in the United States after World War II. Initially focusing on military might, it now encompasses a broad range of facets, all of which impinge on the non-military or economic security of the nation and the values espoused by the national society. Accordingly, in order to possess national security, a nation needs to possess economic security, energy security, environmental security, etc. Security threats involve not only conventional foes such as other nation-states but also non-state actors such as violent non-state actors, narcotic cartels, multinational corporations and non-governmental organisations; some authorities include natural disasters and events causing severe environmental damage in this category.

National Security (2012 film)
National Security (Hangul: 남영동 1985; RR: Namyeong-dong 1985) is a 2012 South Korean prison drama film based on the memoir by Kim Geun-tae, a democracy activist who was kidnapped and tortured by national police inspector Lee Geun-an for 22 days in 1985 during the Chun Doo-hwan regime.
Calling the film "the most painful experience in my 30 years as a filmmaker," director Chung Ji-young wanted the audience to reflect on the theme of torture. He said he found the courage to make the film so that Korean viewers will "engage with our sad history and the sacrifices of great people like Kim Geun-tae in a concrete, meaningful way. If we triumph over the past, we can move forward with unity and reconciliation."
Plot
September 4, 1985. Kim Jong-tae (Park Won-sang), 37, a prominent activist against the military dictatorship of Chun Doo-hwan and onetime commissioner of the Youth Federation for Democracy, is arrested and taken to a special interrogation facility in Namyeong-dong, a district in the center of Seoul synonymous with political torture in the 1970s and 80s because it was the location of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA). During the first three days he is allowed no food or sleep and told to write an exhaustive essay on his life to date. On the fourth day, in order to find out why he resigned from the YFD, head interrogator Park Nam-eun (Myung Gye-nam) starts water torture, and on the next day waterboarding. On the sixth day, torture specialist Lee Du-han, known as "The Undertaker" (Lee Geung-young), starts a deadlier form of water torture, trying to get Jong-tae to admit he is a communist in league with North Korea. By the 11th day Jong-tae writes whatever they want him to, but Lee says it's full of inconsistencies and unusable in a court of law. The next day, after finding Jong-tae tried to smuggle out a note to his wife (Woo Hee-jin), Lee resumes a more painful version of water torture, as well as electric shocks.

National Security (2003 film)
National Security is a 2003 action comedy film, directed by Dennis Dugan, starring Martin Lawrence and Steve Zahn. In addition to Lawrence and Zahn, National Security boasts an additional cast of Bill Duke, Eric Roberts, Colm Feore, Matt McCoy, and others.
The film was released in January 2003 and went on to gross over $50 million worldwide at the box office. The film was shot at various locations in Greater Los Angeles, including Long Beach and Santa Clarita.
Plot
Two LAPD policemen, Hank Rafferty (Zahn) and his partner Charlie Reed (Timothy Busfield), investigate a warehouse heist and discover a gang of thieves, one of which shoots Charlie to death before they escape.
Meanwhile, Earl Montgomery's (Lawrence) lifelong dream to become a police officer is thwarted when he flunks police academy.
Hank crosses paths with Earl when Hank notices Earl trying to get into his car when he finds his keys locked inside. Hank starts to question Earl, who race-baits Hank to the point of getting himself arrested. A bumblebee comes along, to which Earl is violently allergic. Earl panics and Hank tries to swat the bee away with his nightstick. From afar, it appears as if Hank, a white policeman, is brutalizing a black suspect while at the same time a Latino man catches the incident on videotape. Disgraced, Hank is dismissed from the police force and charged with aggravated assault against Earl. He is sentenced to six months in prison.

On July 23rd, we hosted Thomas Blanton, Director of the National Security Archive, for a talk on the The Freedom of Information Act and its effect on the Archive. Under Blanton’s direction, the Archive has organized and led multinational documentary investigations and high-level “critical oral history” conferences on the East German workers’ uprising of 1953 (Potsdam 1993), the Prague Spring 1968 (Prague 1994), the Hungarian revolution of 1956 (Budapest 1996), Polish martial law 1981 (1997 Warsaw), the Bay of Pigs invasion (1996 and 2001 Havana), the Cuban Missile Crisis (1992 and 2002 Havana), the new Cold War history (2000 Moscow), the end of the Cold War (1999 Georgia, Prague, Budapest, Warsaw), the Rwanda and Srebrenica genocides (The Hague 2014 and 2015), the denuclearization of Kazakhstan (Semipalatinsk 2015), Ukraine and nuclear weapons (Siena 2019), and seven summer schools for young Russian faculty at regional universities in cooperation with Kuban State, Voronezh State, and Saratov State universities.

Earl Montgomery (Martin Lawrence), a bombastic police academy reject, and Hank Rafferty (Steve Zahn), a disgraced, mild-mannered cop, can't seem to escape each other. They met on opposite sides of the law during a routine traffic stop that escalated out of control; now as lowly security guards they're thrown together to bust a smuggling operation.

As a result, he is expelled from the academy after a fight. Shortly after getting a job as a security guard, Earl has an altercation with police officer Hank Rafferty (Steve Zahn from Out of Sight). Falsely accusing him of harassment and racism, he causes Hank to lose his job and end up in jail for six months. Upon his release, the ex-cop is hired by the same security agency as Earl. Soon after, both of them discover a huge smuggling operation run by the mysterious Nash (Eric Roberts from King of the Gypsies). Despite hating each other's guts, Earl and Hank team up to catch these criminals.

The U.S. Air Force produced this film to help prepare SAC bomber crews to carry out nuclear strikes and to evade the dangerous effects of those detonations. After a detailed presentation of what SAC had learned about the problem of nuclear effects and how to safeguard the bomber crews from them, the film includes a dramatization of what crew members could experience during a nuclear strike mission that looks like a scene from Stanley Kubrick’s famous film, Dr. Strangelove.

Dr. Savranskaya won the Link-Kuehl Prize in 2011 from the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, recognizing the best documentary publication over the previous two years, for her book (with Thomas Blanton and Vladislav Zubok) “Masterpieces of History”: The Peaceful End of the Cold War in Europe 1989 (Budapest/New York: Central European University Press, 2010). She is author and co-author of several publications on Gorbachev’s foreign policy and nuclear learning and the end of the Cold War, and numerous electronic briefing books on these subjects. She serves as an adjunct professor teaching U.S.-Russian relations at the American University School of International Service in Washington D.C. (since 2001). She earned her Ph.D. in political science and international affairs in 1998 from Emory University, where she studied with Professors Robert Pastor and Thomas Remington. A “Red Diploma” graduate of the Moscow State University in 1988, she went on to study at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1989-90, before moving to Emory, where she won a dissertation fellowship from the Institute for the Study of World Politics, and worked as a Hewlett Fellow at the Carter Presidential Center in 1993. Her articles and chapters have appeared in the Journal of Strategic Studies, The Cold War International History Project Bulletin, and the Cambridge History of the Cold War, among many other publications. She is currently working on the new project documenting the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Programs in the 1990s.

On July 23rd, we hosted Thomas Blanton, Director of the National Security Archive, for a talk on the The Freedom of Information Act and its effect on the Archive. Under Blanton’s direction, the Archive has organized and led multinational documentary investigations and high-level “critical oral history” conferences on the East German workers’ uprising of 1953 (Potsdam 1993), the Prague Spring 1968 (Prague 1994), the Hungarian revolution of 1956 (Budapest 1996), Polish martial law 1981 (1997 Warsaw), the Bay of Pigs invasion (1996 and 2001 Havana), the Cuban Missile Crisis (1992 and 2002 Havana), the new Cold War history (2000 Moscow), the end of the Cold War (1999 Georgia, Prague, Budapest, Warsaw), the Rwanda and Srebrenica genocides (The Hague 2014 and 2015), the denuclearization of Kazakhstan (Semipalatinsk 2015), Ukraine and nuclear weapons (Siena 2019), and seven summer schools for young Russian faculty at regional universities in cooperation with Kuban State, Voronezh State, and Saratov State universities.
National Security Archive
The National Security Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-governmental, non-profit research and archival institution located on the campus of the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1985 to check rising government secrecy, the National Security Archive is an investigative journalism center, open government advocate, international affairs research institute, and is the largest repository of declassified U.S. documents outside of the federal government. The National Security Archive has spurred the declassification of more than 10 million pages of government documents by being the leading non-profit user of the U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), filing a total of more than 50,000 FOIA and declassification requests in its nearly 30-year history.
Organization history and accolades
Journalists and historians founded the National Security Archive in 1985 to enrich research and public debate about national security policy. The National Security Archive continues to challenge national security secrecy by advocating for open government, utilizing the FOIA to compel the release of previously secret government documents, and analyzing and publishing its collections for the public.

Hank (Steve Zahn from Out of Sight) asks Earl (Martin Lawrence from Bad Boys) to tell Denise (Robinne Lee) the truth about the "assault". Earl promises, but when he sees that Denise is an attractive black woman, he breaks his promise and starts hitting on her, playing the victim again. This causes another fight between them, and Denise kicks both of them out.

What’s the movie National Security about?
At the Los Angeles Police Academy, Earl Montgomery (Martin Lawrence from Bad Boys) shows great aptitude to become a good cop, but his rebellious and flamboyant character works against him. As a result, he is expelled from the academy after a fight. Shortly after getting a job as a security guard, Earl has an altercation with police officer Hank Rafferty (Steve Zahn from Out of Sight). Falsely accusing him of harassment and racism, he causes Hank to lose his job and end up in jail for six months. Upon his release, the ex-cop is hired by the same security agency as Earl. Soon after, both of them discover a huge smuggling operation run by the mysterious Nash (Eric Roberts from King of the Gypsies). Despite hating each other's guts, Earl and Hank team up to catch these criminals.
