Why the IRS revokes 501(c)(3) nonprofit status?
The IRS automatically revokes 501(c)(3) nonprofit status when nonprofit leaders fail to file the appropriate "Form 990 Information Return" for three consecutive years.
The type of "Form 990 Information Return" nonprofits should file is contingent upon the amount of cash and other assets the nonprofit has on file at the end of their fiscal year (or accounting period).
DO NOT LOSE YOUR 501(c)(3) STATUS!
If your 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization generated $50,000 or less, then it qualifies for the Form 990N (ePostcard).
We are HAPPY to file your Form 990N (ePostcard) for your 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization! We will complete the following services:
** Create an IRS account for your nonprofit organization
** Complete the steps to file your Form 990N (ePostcard)

Understanding 501(c)(3)Organizations | Finance Strategists | [2 Minutes!]
501(c)(3) is the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) designation for non-profit organizations.
Commonly referred to as charities, these institutions qualify for tax-exempt status.
There are 29 different 501c organization classifications that cover everything from welfare programs to Black Lung Benefit Trusts, but the 501(c)(3) is the most common form of charity.
When an organization is approved for tax-exempt status, it means that it is not subject to federal income tax in the way individuals and companies are.
This is beneficial for charities because it prevents the IRS from being able to take a portion of the donations these organizations use to move the mission of the non-profit forward.
Donors to a 501(c)(3) may benefit from being able to claim a deduction on their taxes for their cont...

Donors to a 501(c)(3) may benefit from being able to claim a deduction on their taxes for their contributions.

The TRUTH about 501(c)3 Churches - IT'S PROBABLY NOT WHAT YOU THINK IT IS! Many people are asking very important questions about tax-exempt churches and what they can, or cannot, do in the way of political involvement. There is a boat load of misinformation out there concerning this topic. Some of the information going around is simply deceitful and blatantly untrue.
I want to set the matter straight for those who desire to know the truth. You might wish to send this article to pastors, church leaders, and church members that may be under a different impression.
--------------------------------
QUESTIONS:Can a pastor "be involved in politics?" If so - how involved? Can a church that is 501(c)3 be involved in the political process? Can a church member that belongs to a 501(c)3 church be involved in politics? Can a church support a candidate running for office? Can a church get involved in a "political issue" - such as a wet/dry election in the county where the church exists, or even in national political issues like abortion, gay marriage, etc? Can a preacher preach on political/biblical issues (homosexuality, evolution, Israel, ISIS, etc.) and even connect those issues with political figures and office holders?
--------------------------------
ANSWERS: (legally documented and practically applied truth)
A pastor (like any other church member) can advocate for, give money to, put yard signs up for, and speak out for a candidate all he wants. He does not give up right of free speech, or his basic rights as a voting citizen just because he is a pastor, or church member, of a 501(c)3 tax exempt church.
But, (and this is the important distinction) the 501(c)3 church cannot use its pulpit or the church organization to endorse or to raise money for a singular/exclusive candidate. More on that will follow in this article.
As a living example of these truths: I speak about politics, political personalities, candidates running for office, political issues, etc. - on my own radio programs, in national radio and TV interviews, and in print media articles ... all the time, and have done so for many years. It is perfectly legal to do so.
You have seen many other pastors and 501(c)3 ministries do it all the time, if you think about it. A few that immediately come to mind (that you continually see on television and in the print media) are Pastor Robert Jeffress, Franklin Graham, Jerry Falwell Jr., etc.
Additionally, I often give financial contributions to candidates, and I post yard signs on my personal property. I have even been known to display bumper stickers and magnetic signs on my personal vehicles.
According to the tax code: As long as the church where I am the pastor, its ministries, its tax-exempt money, etc. are not used as, or merely disguised as, a "political action committee," then I am within my lawful rights to be fully politically engaged as an individual. I can even reveal that I am a pastor, and I can identify the church where I am the pastor - I just cannot say that my church endorses a singular candidate, nor can I blatantly lead the church to endorse a singular candidate by using its official services and money to make such a declaration.
501(c)3 churches can legally be involved in voter registration drives among their membership or community. They can even hold political forums in their church, as well as in their services, provided that all the candidates of the offices that are being highlighted are invited and given a chance to speak and to be recognized.
In other words, one candidate cannot be officially "favored" over another candidate by the church while it is conducting the forum. A church can have "political information" areas designated on their property, and in their buildings, for the purpose of distributing voter guides, candidate literature, etc. - provided that every candidate has equal access to display their materials, and the voter guides fairly include the views of all the candidates. I have done all of these things over the years in the church where I am the pastor.

Don't be fooled. It can be easier to get non-profit status than to keep it. And if you lose it, bad things can happen.

Don't be fooled. It can be easier to get non-profit status than to keep it. And if you lose it, bad things can happen.

What a Form 990 tax-exempt return and variant forms are used for
The IRS and non-profit organizations use Form 990 and related forms in various ways including:
IRS — Get information about tax-exempt organizations.
IRS — Educate non-profits about tax law requirements to maintain 501(c)(3) status.
IRS — Promote compliance with IRS rules to remain tax-exempt.
Non-profits — Share information with the public about the organization and programs.
State gov. — Complete charitable and regulatory oversight of non-profits.
State gov. — Manage state income tax filing requirements for state income tax-exempt organizations.
Key information for filling in a Form 990-N tax-exempt return
Form 990-N, also known as an e-postcard can only be filed online with the IRS, there is no paper version of the form. You will need the following information to fill in and file a 990-N:
Employer identification number (EIN).
Legal name of the non-profit and mailing address.
Any other names the organization uses.
Name and address of a principal officer.
Web site address.
Confirmation that the organization’s annual gross receipts are $50,000 or less.
If applicable, a statement that the organization has terminated or is terminating.
That’s it — nice and simple.
Key information for filling in a Form 990-EZ tax-exempt return
The EZ (easy) version of Form 990 is more complex than the 990-N, but not as detailed as the full 990. Here are the key areas you’ll need to provide information on, in addition to what you’d provide in a 990-N.
Summary of grants, contributions, membership dues, investment returns received, and other income.
Summary of operational expenses and money spent on running the organization and charitable activities.
Summary of gross and net income, profit, or loss and total revenue.
Benefits and salaries paid to various parties and employees.
Summary of types of assets, their value, and changes in asset value over the year.
What the non-profit has accomplished in its three largest programs.
Officers, directors, trustees, and key employees with compensation and benefits.
Other miscellaneous information and schedules.
Key information for filling in a Form 990 tax-exempt return
Finally, we have the full Form 990. Here’s the information you’ll need to provide, in addition to that shown under Form 990-N and Form 990-EZ above.
Checklist of required schedules that must also be filed.
Statements regarding other IRS filings and tax compliance.
Details of governing body and management.
Policies and disclosures.
Complete statement of revenue — how much the non-profit earned from various sources.
Complete statement of expenses — how much the non-profit spent on various activities.
Balance sheet — current financial position.
Reconciliation of net assets.
Financial statements and reporting declarations.
You will also have to fill in and file additional schedules, depending on the nature, activites, and other factors of your non-profit, foundation, or charity. 990 is a long and complex form, so be sure to get some expert advice when you’re filling it in.
