Healthcare in The United Kingdom
We've done the US, Canada, and France. None of them are really socialized healthcare systems. To get at that, we need to go look at a system like that of the UK. More specifically, we're going to talk about England's National Health Service. See what a real "government run" system looks like, how it compares to yours, and what's good (and not so good) about it.

What's gone wrong with the UK's National Health Service? | Inside Story
The UK's National Health Service has been a source of pride for millions of people for more than 70 years.
But nurses, angry about pay and working conditions, are planning another round of strikes this week - leading to greater disruption for the very people the institution is meant to serve.
Staff will walk off the job on Tuesday for the second time this month.
The government has refused to negotiate with them. Ministers say their wage demands are unaffordable.
On Wednesday more than 10-thousand ambulance workers - including paramedics - will also down tools.

We've done the US, Canada, and France. None of them are really socialized healthcare systems. To get at that, we need to go look at a system like that of the UK. More specifically, we're going to talk about England's National Health Service. Fifteen-year-old Kirsty hears how the National Health Service was founded in 1948 and the effect it had on the health of British people. She talks to her grandmother, who was diagnosed with tuberculosis following a routine NHS x-ray, and received free treatment she would not otherwise have been able to afford. Kirsty meets three nurses who talk about health before the service was introduced, and how many people could not afford medical treatment. One of them recalls treating Prime Minister Clement Attlee in an NHS hospital. Medical historian Dr Carole Reeves puts these memories into context, talking about the political difficulties of getting the NHS introduced, and the opposition from doctors at the time. Kirsty visits the British Dental Association, and finds out about the poor state of the nation's teeth at the time. The huge backlog in people needing dental treatment led to a charge for dentist appointments.
This clip is from the BBC series Post War Britain. Six British 15-year-olds trace their own family history back to the post war period of the 1950s and 60s. They speak both to members of their own family and historians to discover what it was like living through this time of great change. With extensive use of archive footage and photos, Post War Britain vividly brings to life events such as the founding of the NHS, large-scale immigration and Mod culture.

Presenter: Nastasya Tay
Guests:
Oksana Pyzik - Pharmacist and Lecturer at UCL School of Pharmacy
Jeff Lazarus - Researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health
Jonathan Portes - Senior Fellow in the Department of Political Economy at King’s College London
