Honduras political crisis brews over congressional president
A political crisis is brewing in Honduras after rival politicians swore in two competing presidents of the National Congress.
The supporters of both Jorge Calix and Luis Redondo celebrated as each claimed the congressional presidency.
The duelling ceremonies reflected a split in President Xiomara Castro's Liberty and Refoundation Party (Libre). Castro had promised the position to Redondo, a member of the Honduran Salvation Party - which supported Castro in the election, but a group of dissident Libre legislators instead chose Calix, a Libre member.

Members of the Free Party fought amongst themselves after congressman Jorge Calix was elected as Congress president instead of Luis Redondo. Castro had agreed with the ally party, Honduras Saviour Party, that Redondo would be elected for that position.

"They were assembled with the nationalists and left behind their peers, their friends, their president, and their coordinator."
Castro will take office as president next week on January 27, amidst internal tensions within her party.

Congress meets in a purpose-built legislative palace (Palacio Legislativo) in the centre of Tegucigalpa. Of a modernist design, it is painted in an array of bright colours and rests on a series of concrete pillars that separate it from the ground.
