In 1919, Kuznetsov joined the Northern Dvina Naval Flotilla, after adding two years to his age in order to be eligible to serve. In 1920 he was stationed at Petrograd and in 1924, as a member of a naval unit, he attended the funeral ceremony of Vladimir Lenin. That same year he joined the Bolshevik Party.
Upon graduation from the Frunze Higher Naval School in 1926, Kuznetsov served on the cruiserChervona Ukraina, first as watch officer and then as First Lieutenant. In 1932 he graduated from the Naval College after studying operational tactics. Upon graduation he was offered one of two options – a desk job with the general staff or a command post on a ship.
A Naval Academy is a national institution that provides undergraduate level education for prospective naval officers.
Naval training commonly took place only at sea until the 20th century, even if those ships were permanently moored. For example, both the FrenchÉcole Navale and the BritishBRNC only comparatively recently constructed their training establishments on shore, despite the history of those two navies - almost contemporary with the establishment of those two nations air force colleges. This is in contrast to their military counterparts such as the École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst which, with their predecessors, have a history of a much more formal presence, in spite (as in the British case) of the Royal Navy being the service that was both 'senior' and historically had commanded most of the state funds for defence purposes. Some states may combine all officer training for their armed forces into one college. This is particularly true where economies of scale mean that it is impractical to have separate naval, military and air force academies - this is the case in, for example, Singapore. It may also be the case in those few of the worlds states that have unified armed forces - the most notable one being the Canadian Forces.
It began operations on 1 June 1897 with a group of cadets from the Army'sColegio Militar who had expressed an interest in training as naval officers.
It was originally located on the premises of the military garrison in Veracruz.
Its original staff comprised one commandant, two officers, six teachers, and 26 cadets.
In 1827 Admiral Ivan Kruzenshtern initiated an Officers' Class at the Naval Cadet Corps. In 1862 the Class was reorganized into an Academic Course of Maritime Science. In 1877, to mark its fiftieth anniversary, the Class was renamed the Nikolaev Maritime Academy (Nikolayevskaya Morskaya Akademiya) and in 1910 was completely detached from the Naval Cadet Corps. The Academy's last pre-revolutionary class was in 1913.
Toward the end of the Soviet era the Academy was named the A.A. Grechko Naval Academy and finally was renamed the N.G. Kuznetsov Naval Academy.
Imperial Period
- The beginning -
Advanced Officers' Class (1827-1877)
Russian scholar M.V. Lomonosov envisioned the establishment of a naval academy in 1759. However, only 68 years later, in 1826, did the famous admiral and seafarer Ivan Fedorovich Kruzenshtern propose the establishment of the earliest organizational precursor to today's Naval Academy - the "Advanced Officers' Class" (Вышие офицерский класс) of the Russian Navy which were opened on 25 April 1827 under the Naval Corps. The mission of the Advanced Officers' Class was to improve the theoretical training of the most promising naval officers in exact and applied sciences. As a result of the revolution in naval affairs brought about by the Crimean War (1853–56) and the clear end of the age of sail the future of naval education in Russia and its transformation was reviewed by a special commission in 1862.
I'm taking you inside the gates of the United States Naval Academy to learn everything we can about this historic campus and the 4,000 Midshipmen who call this place home.

We got an inside look at what it's like on the first day for new freshmen, known as "Plebes," at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Induction Day, or "I-Day," marks the beginning of "Plebe Summer," a challenging six-week basic training program all future midshipmen are required to complete.
UPDATE: In the video, we list Cmdr. Beth Regoli’s title as the Commandant of Midshipmen. However, her correct title is Officer in Charge of Plebe Summer. We regret the error.

How Annapolis Cooks Feed 4,400 Navy Midshipmen In 20 Minutes | Boot Camp | Business Insider
Every day, a team of cooks and waitstaff serves 13,500 meals at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Midshipmen gather for every meal in the historic King Hall, the dining hall in T-shaped Bancroft Hall — the largest single-building dormitory in the world. Staff at King Hall can prepare 2,000 pounds of shrimp, 3,000 hamburgers, or 2,500 pounds of chicken a day for the 4,400 midshipmen seated at the 392 tables in the dining hall.
Business Insider visited King Hall to see cooks prepare an estimated 500 pounds of sauerkraut and 7,500 wursts for their annual Oktoberfest dinner and celebrate the Navy’s 248th birthday by slicing a cake with a ceremonial sword.

As the undergraduate college of our country’s naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers of competence, character, and compassion in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy.
They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years in the Navy or Marine Corps.
“To develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.”
