Refugees in Greece: island on the verge of explosion
Lesbos - like its sister island Kos - has seen many thousands making the short hop across the Mytilini Strait from Turkey. And with more than 15,000 already there, Greece's immigration minister warned the island may be "on the verge of explosion".

Greece Sends Armored Vehicles to Lesvos and Samos Islands
Türkiye has been raising concerns about Greece's militarisation of islands in the eastern Aegean Sea. Now new pictures reportedly show dozens of US armored vehicles being deployed on the islands of Lesvos and Samos near Türkiye's western coast. President Recept Tayyip Erdogan slammed the move, saying Türkiye will utilize all means to protect its interests. Transport of the military vehicles, which were donated by the US to Greece, were reportedly captured by Turkish military UAVs on a surveillance mission, according to security sources. Ankara says the militarisation of eastern Aegean islands is against international law and numerous treaties. So how will this latest incident unfold, and is the movement of American equipment to islands near Turkiye's coast raising the stakes?

Tensions at Mytilene port
(6 Sep 2015) Tensions were high on Sunday at Mytilene port, on the Greek island of Lesbos, where at least 15-thousand migrants and refugees mostly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan have been delayed as they await transport onto Athens.

A Syrian refugee described "a big confrontation between the nationalities here."
The presence of thousands of migrants and refugees at the port is causing disputes between local residents as well.

The capital of the North Aegean Region is Mytilene. The population of Lesbos is approximately 86,000, a third of which lives in its capital, Mytilene, in the southeastern part of the island. The remaining population is distributed in small towns and villages. The largest are Plomari, Kalloni, the Gera Villages, Agiassos, Eresos, and Molyvos (the ancient Mythimna).
According to later Greek writers Mytilene was founded in the 11th century BC by the family Penthilidae, who arrived from Thessaly, and ruled the city-state until a popular revolt (590–580 BC) led by Pittacus of Mytilene ended their rule. In fact the archaeological and linguistic record may indicate a late Iron Age arrival of Greek settlers although references in Late Bronze Age Hittite archives indicate a likely Greek presence then. The name Mytilene itself seems to be of Hittite origin. According to Homer's Iliad, however, Lesbos was part of the kingdom of Priam. Much work remains to be done to determine just what was happening and when. In Middle Ages, it was under Byzantine and then Genoese rule. Lesbos was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1462. The Ottomans then ruled the island until the First Balkan War in 1912, when it became part of the Kingdom of Greece.

(6 Sep 2015) Tensions were high on Sunday at Mytilene port, on the Greek island of Lesbos, where at least 15-thousand migrants and refugees mostly from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan have been delayed as they await transport onto Athens.
Some Afghans have been complaining that Syrians are given priority by the authorities, yet they are not organised into separate lines.
A Syrian refugee described "a big confrontation between the nationalities here."
The presence of thousands of migrants and refugees at the port is causing disputes between local residents as well.
Resident Moscos Limneos said he tries to help the migrants and refugees by bringing them food, but stressed that local people are not wealthy enough to help everyone.
But fellow local resident Evangelos Katsillas complained that the migrant crisis is putting off tourists from visiting the Greek islands.
