Greeks had lived in Asia Minor for over two thousand years, but that history came to a bloody end thanks to the genocide committed against them by the Ottoman and Turkish governments.

In this full length history documentary of Greece I'll cover the full range of time, from the Bronze Age civilisations of Minoan Knossos and Mycenae, through the dark age that followed and into the Archaic Age that saw the Doric people rebirth an even more spectacular culture of a rich Greek mythology of heroes and gods, ornate pottery, the Oracle of Delphi, and an alphabet that is still in use today and was the father of Latin and Cyrillic alphabets used across the world.
The cultural apex came during the Classical Age of the 6th and 5th Centuries BC, where Athens first experimented with democracy, and the Spartan phalanx held off the Persians at Thermopylae, where Socrates, Plato and
Aristotle brought new thinking to the world, creating Western Philosophy, where architecture of temples and theatres reached sublime levels such as those of the Parthenon, and where sculpture of the human form was perfected.
The squabbling polis or city states were eventually united under Phillip of Macedon, but it was his son,
Alexander the Great who would go on to export the rich Greek culture to the rest of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East beyond when he conquered the much greater Persian Empire in 336 BC. After Alexander, his conquests were split among his generals, with the greatest being Ptolemy and Egypt, which only ended three centuries later with Cleopatra.
The Greek phalanx, however, ended up being no match for the Roman legions, and the Greek world was absorbed into the Roman world over several centuries, ending in Actium in 31BC. But "Greece conquered her rude conqueror" and the Romans adopted many of the customs and philosophy of their captors.
As the Pax Romana ended in the 3rd and 4th Centuries AD, with the sack of Rome, only the Eastern Roman Empire, centred around Constantinople would survive, going on for another millennium as the Byzantine Empire. But betrayed by their fellow Christians in the Fourth Crusade in the Sack of Constantinople, the empire was so weakened that it was finally picked off by the Ottoman Turks two centuries later in the Ottoman conquest of 1453.
The next four centuries were the darkest hour for Greece under Ottoman rule, but salvation would come with the help of the Western Powers with Greek independence in 1832. The modern Greek state expanded over the next 80 years to its current size today, albeit with the disastrous setback of the Greek-Turkish War of 1919-22. A brutal occupation by the Axis Powers in World War II ended only to be followed immediately by a civil war that left political scars between the left and right for decades afterwards, the low point being under the Regime of the Colonels from 1967-1974. Greece joined the EEC (EU) in 1982 and enjoyed benefits of membership but suffered badly in the 2008 financial crisis and the austerity measures that followed. Despite this, however, Greeks today still enjoy their best quality of life in centuries.

What do you know about Zeus? Have you ever heard of satyr or centaur? In Greek Mythology for Kids, you will learn about many creatures and important gods and goddesses that the ancient Greeks created. Mythology is basically a way of telling stories. Ancient Greece is the foundation for most western culture today. It lasted from 800 BC to 146 BC, which is when the Roman conquered Greece. The stories the Greeks developed are very popular, and they helped them explain the world around them. Because they didn't have access to the same level of science and technology that we do today, they couldn't explain natural phenomena like the sun rising and falling every day or the occasional thunderstorm.
To explain thunderstorms, for instance, the Greeks believed there was a god called Zeus that could control thunder and throw lightning bolts down from the sky. All the gods and goddesses had wildly exaggerated personalities and one or more magical powers. They were not considered good or bad. They used their powers for good, trickery, and adventure. Some gods were Titans, some were Olympians, and some were relatives of both.
Apart from the gods and goddesses, the ancient Greeks also came up with other interesting creatures and monsters. Cyclops, for example, was a monster with one eye. A centaur was a creature that was half horse and half man. Similarly, a satyr was half man and half goat. One of the most famous monsters was the gorgon called Medusa. Instead of hair on her head, she had snakes. The myth states that if someone looked directly into her eyes, they would immediately turn into stone.

Have you ever wondered where the olympics began? In Ancient Greece, you and your kids will learn the answer to this question. In fact, you will learn a lot about this amazing ancient civilization and its lasting impact on the world today.
Even today, modern society continues to see influences of Ancient Greece. Most capitol buildings, as well as the U.S. capitol and the Supreme Court Building, are modeled after the architecture of Ancient Greece. The area was made up of independent city-states like Sparta, Athens, and Thebes; it was not one big country. And as far as the Olympics are concerned, which we still participate in today, they started in 776 B.C. in Ancient Greece!
Have you ever heard of or do you remember the Pythagorean theorem? This geometrical equation come from Pythagoras, who was an ancient Greek scientist. The famous philosophers Socrates and
Aristotle lived during the Classical period of Ancient Greece.
Alexander the Great was also born near the end of the Classical period. He died during the Hellenistic period, and his death marked the beginning of the end for the ancient civilization.
In Ancient Greece, boys received a formal education, but girls were taught homemaking skills like cooking and sewing. Most Greek men were farmers, but other occupations were soldiers, craftsmen, or government workers. As far as the diet goes, it is similar to what we call the Mediterranean diet. It consisted of olives, cheeses, fruits and vegetables, and fish.

Greeks had lived in
Asia Minor for over two thousand years, but that history came to a bloody end thanks to the genocide committed against them by the Ottoman and Turkish governments.
Alongside the Armenians and Assyrians, the Greeks of the Ottoman Empire faced a wave of deportation, dehumanization, and destruction during and after the First World War which are remembered as some of the bloodiest genocides of the 20th century.
Today on A Day In History, we look at how the Greek population of modern-day Turkey was all but exterminated. This is the third part of our series looking at Ottoman genocides, so check out our earlier videos on the Armenian and Assyrian genocides to see a full picture of the unspeakable crimes committed in the last days of the Ottoman Empire.
Sparks of a Genocide
The Greek, Armenian, and Assyrian Genocides were similar in many ways, but the defining feature of their victims was obvious: Christianity. These three minorities represented the vast majority of Christians who lived under the Muslim Ottoman Empire.
Political events also put the empire’s Greeks in a vulnerable position. Greece has secured independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1823. It was a deep wound to Ottoman pride, made even worse by the continual decay of Ottoman power ever since. As resentment against the new Greek nation simmered, it filtered down and fell upon the Greek minority too.
The sparks of genocide began smouldering as early as 1908 with the Young Turk revolution. The Young Turks were a hyper-nationalist faction who believed in an ethnically Turkish Muslim Empire. Their policy of ‘Turkification’ left no room for non-Turks or non-Muslims and soon every ethnic minority in the empire was in their crosshairs.
In these last years of Ottoman power in Europe, Ottoman authorities harassed ethnic Greeks to encourage them to relocate to Greece itself. Episodes of violence broke out in areas like Thessaloniki and Macedonia, where ethnic Greek leaders were known to disappear, or where the bodies of Greek farmers would be found in the wilderness, left behind by Ottoman authorities, but such violence was intermittent and not yet systemic.
