Mutt and Jeff

Mutt and Jeff was a long-running and widely popular American newspaper comic strip created by cartoonist Bud Fisher in 1907 about "two mismatched tinhorns." Historians regard Mutt and Jeff, originally entitled A. Mutt, as the first American newspaper cartoon published as a strip of panels, as opposed to a single panel, making it the first "comic strip" to successfully pioneer that since-common format.

The "Mutt and Jeff" comic strip remained in syndication until 1983, employing the talents of several cartoonists, chiefly Al Smith who drew the strip for nearly fifty years. The series eventually became a comic book, initially published by All-American Publications and later published by DC Comics, Dell Comics and Harvey Comics. Later it was also published as cartoons, films, pop culture merchandise and reprints.

In the series the character "Jeff" is the mascot of the Fairbury, Nebraska High School team, known as the "Fairbury Jeffs" or the "Jefferson County Jeffs."

Mutt and Jeff (spies)

Mutt and Jeff were two Norwegian spies who worked for the United Kingdom and MI5 and were members of the Double Cross System.

In April 1941 two Norwegians, John "Helge" Moe (Mutt) and Tor Glad (Jeff) fetched up on a remote Aberdeenshire beach, having travelled by seaplane and rubber dinghy. They immediately turned themselves in to the local police as German spies. MI5 soon 'turned' them, assigning them their codenames, which were the names of a pair of cartoon strip characters (see Mutt and Jeff). 'Mutt and Jeff' is also rhyming slang for 'deaf'.

Mutt and Jeff's mission was supposed to be one of sabotage, as well as having a secondary intelligence role, reporting (via wireless) military locations, deployments and civilian morale. MI5 used Mutt and Jeff's radio sets to relay false information, leading the Germans to believe that the United Kingdom intended to invade Norway (this activity was a component of Operation Fortitude). To ensure the German handlers did not suspect Mutt and Jeff of having sold out, MI5 arranged for fake sabotage operations - supposedly the work of the pair - to take place, in one case going so far as to set off a controlled explosion at a power plant which was widely reported in the local media as a genuine attack.

There's just no telling what it's going to be. Cobb: Howdy, Mr. Slick. Slick (Jeff Goldblum): Sheriff. Cobb: Let me tell you about your friend Paden. Me and him, and Tyree, and a few others, we did a good bit of riding together a few years back. Business, you know, and, uh, business was pretty good. We were moving around a lot, the way you have to in that line of work, and somewhere along the line we picked up this dog. One of the boys took to feeding it, so it followed us everywhere. Anyway, this one time we were leaving a little Missouri town in quite a hurry, a bunch of the locals on our tail, and this dog somehow got tangled up with Tyree's horse and Tyree went flying. Tyree was pretty mad when he jumped up, and, being Tyree, he shot the dog. Didn't kill him, though. But before you know it, Paden is off his horse and he's holding this dog. He'd gone all strange on us. Said we should go on without him. Hell, I thought he was kidding at first. But he wasn't. Tyree was ready to plug 'em both. And all this with the posse coming down on us. Yeah, I thought we were pals after all that riding we done together. And all of a sudden he's more worried about some mutt. Well, we did like he asked, and we left him, and he went to jail for a dog. Cobb: And you want to hear the funny part? Paden didn't even like the damn dog. Paden (Kevin Kline): It evened out in the end. They locked me up, but the dog sprung me. Stella: Where's the dog now? Paden: He left me. Cobb: C'mon, Paden, I'll buy you a drink.

Consider Supporting HoH: https://www.patreon.com/HouseofHistory After Operation Sea Lion, the German plan for the invasion of the United Kingdom was written out by the German High Command, they realized they barely had any intelligence officers in Britain, and they weren’t sure what was going on across the English Channel. They thought up Operation Lena, and its purpose was to establish a network of Abwehr agents in Britain. It would be one of the most disastrous intelligence missions the Nazi regime would undertake during the Second World War. When the invasion plan of Britain, codenamed ‘Unternehmen Seelöwe’ or ‘Operation Sea Lion’, was established, most senior German military commanders weren’t exactly thrilled, especially the navy. Many ships were lost during ‘Operation Weserübung’, the invasion of Denmark and Norway, and the Royal British Fleet outmatched the Kriegsmarine in virtually everything. Furthermore, the Wehrmacht voiced complaints that in order for troops to cross the English channel, both air and sea protection was required to hold back imminent British attacks. Hermann Göring’s Luftwaffe ought to obtain absolute control over the skies before Sea Lion could be launched, according to the Kriegsmarine and Wehrmacht. Göring accepted the task, though the Luftwaffe wasn’t suited to wage battle on its own, and Hitler voiced his complaints that “while the occupied territories were divided from Britain by a 23-mile channel, they did not even know what was going on there”. The lack of accurate intelligence could be fatal, and a plan was devised by the Abwehr to send secret agents to Britain. In July 1940, Wilhelm Canaris, head of the Abwehr, Heinz Piekenbrock, a Wehrmacht general and Erwin von Lahousen, a high ranking Abwehr official, attended the conference that outlined Sea Lion. Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel and Hitler himself pressed the men to find spies to gather intelligence in Britain, which Canaris thought was a suicide mission, as he could not suddenly conjure up agents. Resisting the orders wasn’t an option, and as such, men were recruited to become Abwehr Spies in what would become known as Operation Lena. "You talk?" he asks. Yep," the mutt replies. "So, what's your story?" The mutt looks up and says "Well, I discovered this gift pretty young and I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, cause no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. The jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger and I wanted to settle down. So I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired." The guy is amazed. ‘The Dog’ - Silverado (1985) Stella (Linda Hunt): From what I've seen, Paden doesn't care about money. Cobb (Brian Dennehy): He says he doesn't care about anything, but he does. There's just no telling what it's going to be. Cobb: Howdy, Mr. Slick. Slick (Jeff Goldblum): Sheriff. Cobb: Let me tell you about your friend Paden. Me and him, and Tyree, and a few others, we did a good bit of riding together a few years back. Business, you know, and, uh, business was pretty good. We were moving around a lot, the way you have to in that line of work, and somewhere along the line we picked up this dog. One of the boys took to feeding it, so it followed us everywhere. Anyway, this one time we were leaving a little Missouri town in quite a hurry, a bunch of the locals on our tail, and this dog somehow got tangled up with Tyree's horse and Tyree went flying. Tyree was pretty mad when he jumped up, and, being Tyree, he shot the dog. Didn't kill him, though. But before you know it, Paden is off his horse and he's holding this dog. He'd gone all strange on us. Said we should go on without him. Hell, I thought he was kidding at first. But he wasn't. Tyree was ready to plug 'em both. And all this with the posse coming down on us. Yeah, I thought we were pals after all that riding we done together. And all of a sudden he's more worried about some mutt. Well, we did like he asked, and we left him, and he went to jail for a dog. Cobb: And you want to hear the funny part? Paden didn't even like the damn dog. Paden (Kevin Kline): It evened out in the end. They locked me up, but the dog sprung me. Stella: Where's the dog now? Paden: He left me. Cobb: C'mon, Paden, I'll buy you a drink.

Mutt and Jeff

Mutt and Jeff was a long-running and widely popular American newspaper comic strip created by cartoonist Bud Fisher in 1907 about "two mismatched tinhorns." Historians regard Mutt and Jeff, originally entitled A. Mutt, as the first American newspaper cartoon published as a strip of panels, as opposed to a single panel, making it the first "comic strip" to successfully pioneer that since-common format.

The "Mutt and Jeff" comic strip remained in syndication until 1983, employing the talents of several cartoonists, chiefly Al Smith who drew the strip for nearly fifty years. The series eventually became a comic book, initially published by All-American Publications and later published by DC Comics, Dell Comics and Harvey Comics. Later it was also published as cartoons, films, pop culture merchandise and reprints.

In the series the character "Jeff" is the mascot of the Fairbury, Nebraska High School team, known as the "Fairbury Jeffs" or the "Jefferson County Jeffs."
