Musical Youth is a Britishreggaeband. They are best remembered for their successful 1982 single "Pass the Dutchie", which became a number 1 hit around the world. The band recorded two studio albums, and released a number of successful singles throughout 1982 and 1983, including a collaboration with Donna Summer. Musical Youth earned a Grammy Award nomination before disbanding in 1985 after a series of personal problems. The band returned in 2001 as a duo.
History
The group was formed in 1979 when the fathers of Kelvin Grant and Patrick and Junior Waite put together a band featuring two sets of brothers, Kelvin and Michael Grant, and Junior and Patrick Waite. The latter pair's father, Frederick Waite Sr., had been a member of the Jamaican reggae group, The Techniques. Frederick sang lead with Junior at the start of Musical Youth's career. Although schoolboys, the group managed to secure gigs at different Birmingham pubs and released a double single in 1981, including songs "Generals" and "Political", on a local record label 021 Records. An appearance on BBC Radio 1John Peel's evening show brought further attention to the group, and they were signed to MCA Records. By that time, founding father Frederick Waite had backed down, to be replaced by Dennis Seaton as lead singer.
Pass the Dutchie is a song by the English reggae band Musical Youth, taken from their debut studio album, The Youth of Today (1982). The reggae song was a major hit worldwide, peaking at number one on the UK for three weeks, number ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and selling over 5 million copies worldwide.
Background
The song was the band's first release on a major label. It was a cover version of two songs: "Gimme the Music" by U Brown, and "Pass the Kouchie" by Mighty Diamonds, which deals with the recreational use of cannabis (kouchie being slang for a cannabis pipe). For the cover version, the song's title was bowdlerized to "Pass the Dutchie", and all obvious drug references were removed from the lyrics; e.g., when the original croons "How does it feel when you got no herb?", the cover version refers to "food" instead. Dutchie is used as a patois term to refer to a food cooking pot such as a Dutch oven in Jamaica and the Caribbean. It has since become a drug reference, denoting a blunt stuffed with marijuana and rolled in a wrapper from a Dutch Masters cigar, since American and British listeners assumed that the term was a drug reference.
Pass the Dutchie is the second EP released by Buck-O-Nine and was released in 1998 on TVT Records. The song was featured on the soundtrack for the American comedy thriller film, Homegrown.
Season seven aired Mondays at 7:30p.m. (7:00p.m. in Quebec) on CTV, a Canadian terrestrialtelevision network. In the United States it aired Fridays at 8:00p.m. on The N, a digitalcable network aimed at teenagers and young adults. Season seven premiered in the US three months before it began broadcasting in Canada, on 5 October 2007. In total sixteen episodes aired in the US before they did Canada. Further to being broadcast on television, episodes were made available for free streaming on CTV's website; registered users of the Canadian and US iTunes Stores are also able to purchase and download the season for playback on home computers and certain iPods. The second Degrassi dedicated soundtrack, Music from Degrassi: The Next Generation, was released 9 December 2008.
