Sneak peek - how Joseon’s main palace Gyeongbokgung was destroyed and brought back to life!
Gyeongbokgung, or Gyeongbok Palace, is an iconic landmark in central Seoul. The compound looks stunning in all seasons, by day or lit up at night. But it also has a rich and often turbulent past since being built in 1395. It was the main Joseon dynasty palace until a fire destroyed it in the late 1500s. In the 1800s, it was restored – before being destroyed again by Imperial Japan during the first half of the 20th century. Now, we can celebrate the 30th anniversary of excavation and restoration work at Gyeongbokgung

ABOUT "THE MARK OF EMPIRE: KINGDOMS OF THE EAST":
How do legacies of the past shape some of Asia’s most modern nations today? Singaporean scholar and curator Peter Lee travels to Japan and South Korea to seek out epic legends and vibrant traditions of four distinct nations and peoples in East Asia.
He embarks on a journey of adventure and discovery as he learns more about the mighty Tokugawa Shogun during Edo-period Japan. Up north in Hokkaido, he goes on a search for wild bears in their legendary natural landscapes. And as he makes his way down south, Peter traces the history of the small but vibrant Ryukyu Kingdom that emerged 600 years ago. In neighbouring South Korea, Peter meets the Korean musicians reviving Joseon-era music into radio-worthy pop, and discovers how much of the nation’s cultural footprint is shaped by this legendary period in Korean history.

In 2333 BCE, Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom, was established in northern Korea, while the Jin state occupied the southern part of Korea by the 3rd century BC.
In 108 BCE, the Han Dynasty invaded the kingdom and installed four commanderies in northern Korea. Three of the commanderies fell within a few decades, except the Lelang Commandery.
The Three Kingdoms of Korea comprises Goguryeo, Silla, and Baekje. In the early 6th century, Silla’s power extended across the Korean Peninsula.
By the 640s, Silla allied with the Tang dynasty of China to conquer Baekje and later Goguryeo, unifying the central and southern parts of the Korean Peninsula into Unified Silla. Meanwhile, the northern part was under the control of Balhae, founded by King Go.
In 918, Goryeo was founded as the successor of Goguryeo, gradually unifying most of the Korean peninsula.
Following the Mongol invasions of Korea from 1230 to 1270, Goryeo existed as a vassal state and compulsory ally of the Mongol-ruled Yuan dynasty in China.
After a coup, General Yi Seong-gye overthrew the Goryeo dynasty and, in 1392, established the Joseon dynasty.
From 1592 to 1598, Joseon suffered from the great destruction of the Japanese invasions.
In the 19th century, Joseon adopted a harsh isolationist policy, for which it became known as the “Hermit Kingdom.” However, Joseon was soon forced to open its borders, leading to an era of Japanese imperial rule.
In 1897, the Joseon dynasty proclaimed the Korean Empire (1897–1910). In 1910, Japan formally annexed Korean Empire which was then officially named Chōsen.
After the end of World War II with the unconditional surrender of Japan, in 1945, Korea was partitioned along the 38th parallel with the north under Soviet occupation and the south under US occupation.
The politics of the Cold War resulted in the 1948 establishment of two sovereign states, North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea.
In 1950, the Korean War broke out when Soviet-backed North Korea invaded South Korea and ended without a formalized peace treaty. The Korean Peninsula remained divided by the Korean Demilitarized Zone up to the present day.
In 2018, the Panmunjom Declaration was signed between the Supreme Leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, and the President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, announcing that they would work to officially end the Korean long-lasting conflict.
Is there any chance that North Korea and South Korea will be reunified into a single Korean sovereign state?

Visitors to Korea can step back in time this spring and summer, and experience life back in the Joseon Dynasty.
The Korean Folk Village is hosting a traditional culture festival named 'Welcome to Joseon' and our Kan Hyeong-woo takes us there.
Dressed in traditional clothes, horse-riders perform highly-skilled techniques.
The crowd answers with a round of applause.
The Korean Folk Village has organized a special cultural festival- 'Welcome to Joseon.'
"It's been fun and educational. It's nice that you can get to go through the traditional layout of how Korea used to be and the food is good, too."
The Joseon dynasty era lasted for about five hundred years from the late 1300s to the late 1800s.
Surrounded by Joseon-style architecture and props, actors dressed in traditional outfits perform skills on horseback, as well as holding a traditional wedding ceremony and a concert to celebrate the local governor's birthday.
And visitors can get involved too, through a range of hands-on activities.
The stamp tour gives you an opportunity to try out different costumes from the Joseon Dynasty.
"You can get stamps at different spots around the Korean Folk Village. Once you have collected all of them, you will be given this 'Hopae' - an identification tag used during the Joseon Dynasty."
The Korean Folk Village's surroundings add to the feeling that visitors really have stepped back in time.
"Just so many programs, there's so many things. The nature here is very nice, too. The air is nice. So it's a very nice place to come. I feel like every foreigner who comes to Seoul must come to the Korean Folk Village to kind of have an experience."
The Korean Folk Village's 'Welcome to Joseon' festival runs through June 23.
More information about the venue can be found on its official website.

Lesser (Little) Goguryeo Kingdom
Lesser (Little) Goguryeo Kingdom
------------------------------------------------------
Lesser Goguryeo or Little Goguryeo (699-820) (소고구려, 小高句麗) was a state established by the refugees of Goguryeo, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea.
The kingdom was originally called Goryeo, but later historians added "Lesser" for disambiguation from Goguryeo, which was also called Goryeo sometimes. "Goryeo" is also the name of a later kingdom in Korean history, and the source of the English name Korea.
After the Korean Silla kingdom and the Chinese Tang Dynasty allied to destroy Goguryeo, the Liaodong Peninsula was briefly administered by Tang. Tang soon lost effective control due to rebellion by Goguryeo refugees, and the region became a buffer zone between Tang and the Korean kingdom of Balhae. Alt...

Although Lesser Goguryeo declared itself an independent kingdom, it was soon absorbed into Balhae, which became a successor state to Goguryeo.
In 699, the Tang government sent former Goguryeo Prince Go Deokmu, the third son of Goguryeo's last ruler, King Bojang, to Liaodong Peninsula, naming him "King of Joseon" and Governor of the Yodong Commandery of the Protectorate General to Pacify the East. Like his father, Go Deokmu had plans to rebel against the Tang and revive Goguryeo and provide a kingdom for the Goguryeo people.
The Tang Empire at the time was undergoing several crises like the An Lushan Rebellion. Along with these major events was also the pressure given by the Goguryeo and Baekje revival movements and the Silla kingdom. This pressure allowed Go Deokmu to take control of the Protectorate General to Pacify the East and establish a kingdom.
The Little Goguryeo kingdom was established with Go Deokmu as its first king. Very little is known about how the establishment of Little Goguryeo was reacted upon by neighboring kingdoms. It is known that the Balhae kingdom was in good terms with Lesser Goguryeo in respect for the similar purposes that the two kingdoms possessed. The location of Go Deokmu's capital or when he died is unknown.
Around 820, after two generations of ruling the Liaodong Peninsula and other former regions of Goguryeo, Lesser Goguryeo was absorbed into Balhae during the reign King Seon of Balhae. Go Deokmu's Lesser Goguryeo is believed to have lasted for about 120 years before being absorbed into Balhae.

SUMMARY
=======
The Korean alphabet, known as Hangul ( HAHN-gool; from Korean 한글, Korean pronunciation: [ha(ː)n.ɡɯl]), has been used to write the Korean language since its creation in the 15th century by King Sejong the Great. It may also be written as Hangeul following the standard Romanization.
It is the official writing system of Korea, both South and North. It is a co-official writing system in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture and Changbai Korean Autonomous County in Jilin Province, China. It is also sometimes used to write the Cia-Cia language spoken near the town of Baubau, Indonesia.
The Hangul alphabet originally consisted of 28 letters with 17 consonant letters and 11 vowel letters when it was created. As four became obsolete, the modern Hangul consists of total 24 letters with 14 consonant letters and 10 vowel letters. In North Korea the total is counted 40. It consists of 19 consonant letters and 21 vowel letters as it additionally includes 5 tense consonants (ㄲ ㄸ ㅃ ㅉ ㅆ) and 20 (for compound and complex vowel letters as well as ㅐ ㅔ).
The Korean letters are written in syllabic blocks with each alphabetic letter placed vertically and horizontally into a square dimension. For example, the Korean word for "honeybee" (kkulbeol) is written 꿀벌, not ㄲㅜㄹㅂㅓㄹ. As it combines the features of alphabetic and syllabic writing systems, it has been described as an "alphabetic syllabary" by some linguists. As in traditional Chinese writing, Korean texts were traditionally written top to bottom, right to left, and are occasionally still written this way for stylistic purposes. Today, it is typically written from left to right with spaces between words and western-style punctuation. Some linguists consider it among the most phonologically faithful writing systems in use today. One interesting feature of Hangul is that the shapes of its consonants seemingly mimic the shapes of the speaker's mouth when pronouncing each consonant.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

SUMMARY
=======

SUMMARY
=======
The Korean language (South Korean: 한국어/韓國語 Hangugeo; North Korean: 조선말/朝鮮말 Chosŏnmal) is an East Asian language spoken by about 80 million people. It is a member of the Koreanic language family and is the official and national language of both Koreas: North Korea and South Korea, with different standardized official forms used in each territory. It is also one of the two official languages in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture and Changbai Korean Autonomous County of Jilin province, China. Historical and modern linguists classify Korean as a language isolate; however, it does have a few extinct relatives, which together with Korean itself and the Jeju language (spoken in the Jeju Province and considered somewhat distinct) form the Koreanic language family. This implies that Korean is not an isolate, but a member of a micro-family. The idea that Korean belongs to the controversial Altaic language family is discredited in academic research. Korean is agglutinative in its morphology and SOV in its syntax.
