There are 27 municipalities with language facilities in Belgium which must offer services to residents in Dutch, French or German, in addition to their official languages. All other municipalities – with the exception of those in the Brussels region which is bilingual – are unilingual and only offer services in their official languages, either Dutch or French.

What Makes POWER CENTERS Bad for Cities: Investigating Heinous Land Uses, Episode 1
In this first episode of a series that will look at terrible land uses and explore everything that makes them bad for cities, your intrepid host visits a Power Center. We'll look at the current state of affairs for the Big Box retail format, inventory the smaller retail and dining options that tend to cluster around these behemoths, and understand the way Power Centers are designed.
Today's video looks at the history of the Big Box as well as the Power Center, reviews typical methodologies used to estimate the parking needs of a "discount superstore" (hint: they are enormous), the trip generation (and discussion of how it affects adjacent transportation facilities), and how Power Centers leverage ubiquitous auto ownership.
We'll also take brief side trips to a typical suburban mall (the ...

Amanda Burden: How public spaces make cities work
More than 8 million people are crowded together to live in New York City. What makes it possible? In part, it's the city's great public spaces -- from tiny pocket parks to long waterfront promenades -- where people can stroll and play. Amanda Burden helped plan some of the city's newest public spaces, drawing on her experience as, surprisingly, an animal behaviorist. She shares the unexpected challenges of planning parks people love -- and why it's important.

We'll look at the history of this type of outdoor shopping mall, which dates back to the 1980s, refine our definition of what it is, and use our case study to examine all the things that make them great...or heinous.
At the heart of today's video is a case study on Town Square Las Vegas, a typical lifestyle center located on Las Vegas Boulevard (The Strip), a bit south of the resort corridor. We'll look at all the things that go into its particular brand of simulated urbanism: the streetscapes, the architecture, the fixtures and furnishings, the plazas. And the we'll zoom out and look at how Town Square interfaces with the regional transportation system and...

Finally we'll talk about how cities use economic development tools, including tax incentives, to lure Power Center retailers to town, and why it's counterproductive. Hope you enjoy!

An Introduction to the Municipalities in Transition System. Municipalities in Transition have developed and piloted a flexible system that creates the conditions for communities and municipalities to collaborate well together in order to create systemic change for sustainability. This “beta” methodology has been piloted in 6 communities in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Hungary and Brazil.
This webinar gives an overview of the development of the MiT System - a "taste", and answers to some questions.

Any vision for an optimistic future must include communities, cities and local action to implement the New Urban Agenda and achieve the SDGs, including Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities. #ItAllStartsLocally

We'll also take brief side trips to a typical suburban mall (the Galleria at Sunset) to do a wellness check, and to the Sunset Station Hotel/Casino to review a completely different form of intense trip generation. Finally we'll talk about how cities use economic development tools, including tax incentives, to lure Power Center retailers to town, and why it's counterproductive. Hope you enjoy!

In this third episode in our series on terrible land uses and everything that makes them bad for cities, we tackle Lifestyle Centers.
And the we'll zoom out and look at how Town Square interfaces with the regional transportation system and nearby land uses -- and it isn't a pleasant story.
All this -- and much more! Hope you "enjoy."

Facilities in cities
Cambridge IELTS Book 17
There are 27 municipalities with language facilities in Belgium which must offer services to residents in Dutch, French or German, in addition to their official languages. All other municipalities – with the exception of those in the Brussels region which is bilingual – are unilingual and only offer services in their official languages, either Dutch or French.
