Today we hear a rare Combat Story from the highest echelons of the military from the eyes of retired General George Casey, who was the Commanding General, Multi-National Force – Iraq, from 2004 to 2007, and Chief of Staff of the Army from 2007 to 2011.
General Casey’s decisions resulted in many of the combat stories we’ve heard on this show as Delta operators, snipers, soldiers, and Marines carried out tactical operations that he and his staff decided at the strategic levels.
I have a very short but personally important moment in which my life intersected with the General’s: he commissioned me into the Army. I was a student and ROTC cadet at Georgetown University where I played football and was on campus during the aftermath of 9/11. Similarly, General Casey was a student at Georgetown, also played football, and was on campus during the Vietnam War when it was not popular to wear the uniform.
Mine was the first full class to commission into the post-9/11 era and I found it fitting that General Casey was the man who made that possible. He’s got some amazing stories, including being asked to attend the second-ever selection course for Delta Force to create the conditions for the first-ever elections in post-Saddam Iraq decades later.
This was a special interview for me personally and I hope you enjoy the experience, highs, lows, and mindset of one of the very few to ever have the opportunity to wear four stars.

SUMMARY
=======
The Multi-National Force – Iraq (MNF–I), often referred to as the coalition forces, was a military command during the 2003 invasion of Iraq and much of the ensuing Iraq War, led by the United States of America (Operation Iraqi Freedom), United Kingdom (Operation TELIC), Australia, Spain and Poland, responsible for conducting and handling military operations.
The MNF-I replaced the previous force, Combined Joint Task Force 7, on 15 May 2004, and was later itself reorganized into its successor, United States Forces – Iraq, on 1 January 2010. The Force was significantly reinforced during the Iraq War troop surge of 2007. As of May 2011, all non-U.S. coalition members had withdrawn from Iraq, with the U.S. military withdrawing from the country on December 18, 2011, thus, bringing about an end to the Iraq War.Also in Iraq, since August 2003, is the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq, which does humanitarian work and has a number of guards and military observers. The U.N. Assistance Mission in Iraq was not a part of the MNF-I, but a separate entity. The NATO Training Mission – Iraq, was in Iraq from 2004 to December 2011, where it trained the Iraqi Army and the Iraqi police forces.

"The presence of a number of these people here in Iraq are essential to a lot of our operations, that's just a fact of life. A large part of the reason the contractors and the protective services are here in their capacity is to prevent us from having to have soldiers or marines standing guard at a lot of different facilities or that sort of thing. STORYLINE
A US military spokesman said, on Sunday, that the presence of private security contractors, such as Blackwater USA, was "essential" to a lot of US operations in Iraq.
"The presence of a number of these people here in Iraq are essential to a lot of our operations, that's just a fact of life," Admiral Mark I. Fox, Communications Division chief for the Multi-National Force in Iraq, told reporters at a press conference in Baghdad.
The shooting deaths of 11 civilians at Nisoor Square in Baghdad on September 16 - allegedly at the hands of Blackwater USA security contractors - has placed a strain on relations between Iraq and the United States.
Blackwater denies its guards fired illegally and says they were defending themselves from armed insurgents.
A joint US-Iraqi commission has since been created to try to come up with a common set of facts about the incident and look at ways to clarify the regulations under which private security guards operate in Iraq.
But Fox maintained there was "a legitimate reason for these contractors to do their work."
"But how and how the way ahead will be determined, I think we should wait for these investigations and for the joint commission to issue their study," he added.
The Blackwater incident sparked outrage in Iraq and a debate in the Unites States over the rules of engagement for US military forces operating oversees - with some calling for a review of US troop operations in Iraq.
However both Fox and Ground Combat Element commander for Multi-National Force in Western Iraq, General Mark Gurganus insisted that a review was not necessary.
"There has been no change because there's no need for a change," said Gurganus, echoing Fox's sentiments.

STORYLINE:
Senior provincial and military officials say nearly 50-thousand Iraqi police and soldiers, backed up by US-led coalition troops, are taking part in a new military offensive northeast of Baghdad.
"Iraqi and coalition forces are undeterred our mission to pursue terrorists, criminals and special groups. Our joint security operations in Basra, Baghdad, Mosul, Amara and now in Diyala, they make progress in establishing security under the rule of law," spokesman for Multi-National Force-Iraq Brigadier General David Perkins told a news conference on Wednesday.
Officials said the operation began on Tuesday and is aimed at clearing al-Qaida in Iraq militants from what's considered the last major insurgent stronghold near the capital.
The operation has been dubbed "Omens of Prosperity." It is the latest in a series of efforts to control the largely rural area.
But US and Iraqi commanders have said they're more optimistic this one can work because more troops will be involved and Iraqi security forces are better prepared.
New checkpoints have been erected across the province and authorities have ordered a ban on unofficial traffic as search operations got under way in the provincial capital of Baqouba and surrounding areas.
The head of the provincial council in Diyala said on Wednesday that operations are currently focused on the regional capital of Diyala but will be extended to areas near the Iranian border.
Ibrahim Bajilan said he believes the new crackdown will take about two weeks "and then law will be imposed in all Diyala."
The rural province has been one of the hardest to control despite numerous military operations.

UN Chief welcomes Kenya’s offer to lead multinational force in Haiti against gangs
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed an offer by Kenya to lead a multinational force into Haiti after the weak government there continues to battle for control of the island nation against powerful gang formations. This follows calls from U.N. officials for the deployment of an international security force to help stabilize the country that for months appeared to have fallen on deaf ears. Kenya's offer to "positively consider leading a multinational force" could see the Security Council authorize such a mandate in the days or weeks ahead.

Australian Defence Personnel marked a significant milestone on Operation Mazurka recently as they held commemorations to mark the 40th Anniversary of the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt on the Sinai Peninsula.
A military parade celebrated the formation of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) in Sharm El Sheikh.
The MFO consists of the peacekeeping force that monitors the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, and comprises military and civilian personnel from 12 nations.
The current MFO Force Commander, Australian Army Major General Simon Stuart, DSC, AM, is the second Australian to command the force, following Major General David Ferguson AM, CSC who was in command from 1994-1997.
Australia's contribution to the MFO began in 1982 when an Australian-New Zealand helicopter squadron deployed to the Sinai.
There are currently 29 Australian Defence Force members deployed to the Sinai working alongside other nations to continue peace and stability of the region.
MFO Director General, Ambassador Stephen Beecroft, also addressed the parade.
Ambassador Beecroft thanked the MFO on behalf of Egypt and Israel for their enlightened pursuit of peace.
Following the parade, members of the Egyptian and Israeli delegation marked the event with the planting of an olive tree at the commemoration site at MFO Headquarters.
The ADF has been a long-standing contributor to the MFO maintaining a presence for over 30 years through Operation Mazurka.
Personnel from the ADF will continue to contribute in varying roles including security, logistics and administration, as well as key staff roles.
