His stage name was inspired by his scruffy facial hair as well as his trademark loose-lined drawing style. He has been DJing since 1994, at first in and around Manchester then nationwide. He is known for DJing in marathon sets (often exceeding six hours), his eclectic musical taste, his love of a "nice cup of tea", and the quirky home-produced visuals and animations associated with his music. In an interview he said: "It’s about putting a lot of effort in and paying attention to detail. I get annoyed if I don’t take risks. I’m very hard on myself."
Career
In his twenties Mr. Scruff's first 12" vinyl, "Hocus Pocus", was released on the small Manchester-based label Robs Records. Subsequent singles and his first album (Mr. Scruff) followed, released on Robs Records subsidiary Pleasure Music. After a brief spell working with Mark Rae, he moved to the larger Ninja Tune label and subsequently released the albums Keep It Unreal and Trouser Jazz.
Mr. Scruff is the debut studio album by the eponymous British DJ. It was released via Pleasure Music on May 12, 1997.
The album saw the emergence of one of Scruff's obsessions — sea-life. The opening track, "Sea Mammal", was the first of several to use cut-uprecordings of voice-overs from children's stories and nature documentaries to create surreal and silly stories. The track is a tribute to Boogie Down Productions' track "My Philosophy", and was originally released as the B-side to Scruff's debut release, the single "Hocus Pocus" (1995). The album also contains another track that references sea creatures — the album's closer, "Wail" (being a homophone for "whale").
The album is currently out of print, but in 2005 it was remastered and re-released via Ninja Tune under the name Mrs. Cruff, containing three additional tracks.

Historic etiquette
Historically, mister—like Sir or my lord—was applied only to those above one's own status in the peerage. This understanding is now obsolete, as it was gradually expanded as a mark of respect to those of equal status and then to all gentlemen. It is now used indiscriminately.
In past centuries, Mr was used with a first name to distinguish among family members who might otherwise be confused in conversation: Mr Doe would be the eldest present; younger brothers or cousins were then referred to as Mr Richard Doe and Mr William Doe and so on. Such usage survived longer in family-owned business or when domestic servants were referring to adult male family members with the same surname: "Mr Robert and Mr Richard will be out this evening, but Mr Edward is dining in," but such usage today is rare in American culture but still quite common in others as a sign of respect when first names are being used, the last name is not known, or where English is not the mother tongue.
