The Very Reverend Charles A. Vassani (1831–1896) established the U.S. Commissariat of the Holy Land in 1880, in New York City. It was from this location that Rev. Vassani and Father Godfrey Schilling, O.F.M. (1855-1936) began to plan to build a "Holy Land in America" and a Holy Sepulchre. They envisioned building on a high hill on Staten Island, overlooking the entrance to New York's harbor. These plans were later dropped. Eventually the plans changed to a wooded hilltop in Brookland, Washington, D.C.. In 1897, Fr. Godfrey purchased the McCeeney Estate in Brookland in order to found a monastery and church.
The Franciscan Church (German:Franziskanerkirche) and Franciscan Monastery (German:Franziskanerkloster) are a church and associated monastery in the centre of the city of Graz, Austria. The monastery was founded by the Franciscan order, who still own it, and is first mentioned in 1239.
In the church, a high but narrow 14th-century chancel contrasts with the comparatively low and wide nave. The chancel was gutted by a bomb in World War II, and subsequently rebuilt with a new contemporary interior. The stained glass windows bathe the church in light, whilst the chancel is dominated by a grey cast ironcrucifix that seems to hover. The organ was installed by the Potsdam based Schuke company in 2004.
The original Gothiccloisters of the monastery enclose a monastery garden, and are open to the public. The walls of the cloister are lined with the names, professions and life data of the distinguished burghers and noblemen who were buried in this place between the 15th and the 18th centuries. On the first floor of the monastery, with windows looking into the chancel of the church, is the oratory, where the friars meet for their holy offices.
50 years ago the first group of Franciscan friars came to live on the Werd island in Stein am Rhein in northeastern Switzerland. As in the past, the friars go out on the streets, bringing hope to drug addicts and homeless people.

A visit to the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land, Washington, DC, Jan. 5 2013
The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land is a beautiful building located in Northeast DC. I got there too late in the day to take a guided tour, which would have let me see some of the underground sites, but I did get to walk around the beautiful cloister and see the main church building. I hope you'll get a chance to take a tour and see what I came too late to view!

Visiting DUBROVNIK's Franciscan Monastery | Oldest Pharmacy in Europe!
I spent the morning looking around the Franciscan Church and Monastery, home to a historic pharmacy, church and library.

In the centre of it all there's a pretty little garden surrounded by cloisters. A nice place to visit but packed full of tourists (I know, I know - I'm one of them!). After strolling around the old town for a few more hours I found the steps where the hit TV show Game of Thrones filmed Cersei's Walk of Shame scene.
