The hospital is also affiliated with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, which opened in September 1968. In 2013, The Mount Sinai Hospital joined with the Continuum Health Partners in the creation of The Mount Sinai Health System. The system encompasses the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and seven hospital campuses in the New York metropolitan area, as well as a large, regional ambulatory footprint.
In 2014 and 2015 two of the biggest hospitals in Manhattan that were part of the Health System were formally renamed with Mount Sinai moniker: St. Luke's Hospital was renamed Mount Sinai St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospital was renamed Mount Sinai West.
Mount Sinai Hospital has existed in Toronto since 1923 under various names; it has occupied its present site on University Avenue since 1953. In the fiscal year ending March 2013, Mount Sinai Hospital cared for 128,714 inpatients days, delivered almost 7000 babies and performed almost 20,000 surgeries. Toronto and area residents made more than half a million ambulatory clinic visits to Mount Sinai. In that same year, the hospital’s Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Department saw 56,080 visits and that number is expected to increase to 80,000 per year over the next few years.
Mount Sinai is a 2,285-metre (7,497ft) moderately high mountain near the city of Saint Catherine in the Sinai region. It is next to Mount Catherine (at 2,629m or 8,625ft, the highest peak in Egypt). It is surrounded on all sides by higher peaks of the mountain range.
Geology
Mount Sinai's rocks were formed in the late stage of the Arabian-Nubian Shield's (ANS) evolution. Mount Sinai displays a ring complex that consists of alkaline granites intruded into diverse rock types, including volcanics. The granites range in composition from syenogranite to alkali feldspar granite. The volcanic rocks are alkaline to peralkaline and they are represented by subaerial flows and eruptions and subvolcanicporphyry. Generally, the nature of the exposed rocks in Mount Sinai indicates that they originated from differing depths.
According to the Book of Exodus, Mount Sinai (Hebrew: הר סיני, Har Sinai) is the mountain at which the Ten Commandments were given to Moses by God. In the Book of Deuteronomy, these events are described as having transpired at Mount Horeb. The name "Sinai" is only used in the Torah by the Jahwist and Priestly source, whereas Horeb is only used by the Elohist and Deuteronomist. "Sinai" and "Horeb" are generally considered to refer to the same place, although there is a small body of opinion that the two names may refer to different locations.
Hebrew Bible texts describe the theophany at Mount Sinai in terms which a minority of scholars, following Charles Beke (1873), have suggested may literally describe the mountain as a volcano and have led to a search for alternative locations.
According to some biblical scholars, Horeb is thought to mean "glowing/heat", which seems to be a reference to the sun, while Sinai may have derived from the name of Sin, the Sumerian deity of the moon, and thus Sinai and Horeb would be the mountains of the moon and sun, respectively.
Since 1998, Sinai Hospital has been a part of the LifeBridge Health system, which also runs Northwest Hospital in Randallstown, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Nursing Home (which is across the street from Sinai), Courtland Gardens Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics, several medical office buildings in the Baltimore area, and a health and fitness club called LifeBridge Health & Fitness, located in Pikesville, Maryland.

Trudeau condemns protest at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital: "Reprehensible"
Toronto police say they’re investigating “several incidents” that happened in front of downtown's Mount Sinai Hospital, after a demonstration there that has drawn sharp criticism from both the premier and the prime minister.
Demonstrators marched in Toronto Monday evening and at one point demonstrators were seen outside Mount Sinai Hospital. Some were even seen climbing onto the building, with at least one waving a Palestinian flag.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reacted to the demonstration in a post on social media platform X, calling it “reprehensible.”
“Hospitals are places for treatment and care, not protests and intimidation,” Trudeau said. “I strongly condemn this display of antisemitism. In Toronto and across Canada, we stand with Jewish communities against this hate.”

Noa Tishby Explores Mount Sinai: A Legacy of Resilience in Toronto's Jewish Community
Pro-Hamas demonstrators targeted Mount Sinai Hospital under the guise of “anti-Zionism” which is just the new face of antisemitism. I recently visited the original Mount Sinai building in Toronto, which has a rich Jewish history.
In August of 1913, four immigrant women from Toronto’s Jewish community started knocking on doors to raise money for a hospital. The Jewish immigrant population in Toronto was struggling; most of the new immigrants didn’t speak English and were afraid of large institutions. And, sadly, not a hospital in the city would give Jewish doctors a place to practice.
It took them nine years, but by 1922, Mrs. Cohn, Miller, Spiegel and Adler had raised $12,000, enough to buy a building at 100 Yorkville Ave.
