Mount Meru (also Sumeru (Sanskrit) or Sineru (Pāli) or Kangrinboqe) is the name of the central world-mountain in Buddhist cosmology. Etymologically, the proper name of the mountain is Meru (Pāli Neru), to which is added the approbatory prefix su-, resulting in the meaning "excellent Meru" or "wonderful Meru".

The concept of Sumeru is closely related to the Hindu mythological concept of a central world mountain, called Meru, but differs from the Hindu concept in several particulars.

Characteristics

According to Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakośabhāṣyam, Sumeru is 80,000 yojanas tall. The exact measure of the yojana is uncertain, but some accounts put it at about 24,000 feet, or approximately 4-1/2 miles, but other accounts put it at about 7-9 miles. It also descends beneath the surface of the surrounding waters to a depth of 80,000 yojanas, being founded upon the basal layer of Earth. Sumeru is often used as a simile for both size and stability in Buddhist texts.

Mount Meru

Mount Meru is a sacred mountain with five peaks in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist cosmology and is considered to be the center of all the physical, metaphysical and spiritual universes.

Meru (Sanskrit: मेरु), also called Sumeru (Sanskrit) or Sineru (Pāli) (Tibetan: ཪི་རྒྱལ་པོ་རི་རབ་ ), to which can be added the approbatory prefix su-, resulting in the meaning "excellent Meru" or "wonderful Meru" and Mahameru i.e. "Great Meru" (Chinese: 須彌山 Xumi Shan；Pāli Neru； Burmese: မြင်းမိုရ် Myinmo).

Many famous Hindu and similar Jain as well as Buddhist temples have been built as symbolic representations of this mountain. The highest point (the finial bud) on the pyatthat, a Burmese-style multi-tiered roof, represents Mount Meru.

Geographical

The dimensions attributed to Mount Meru, all the references to it being as a part of the Cosmic Ocean, along with several statements like that the Sun along with all the planets circle the mountain, make determining its location most difficult, according to most scholars.

Mount Meru (Tanzania)

Mount Meru is an active stratovolcano located 70 kilometres (43 mi) west of Mount Kilimanjaro in the nation of Tanzania. At a height of 4,562.13 metres (14,968 ft), it is visible from Mt Kilimanjaro on a clear day, and is the ninth or tenth highest mountain in Africa, dependent on definition.

Much of its bulk was lost about 8,000 years ago due to an eastward volcanic blast, similar to the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in the U.S. state of Washington. Mount Meru most recently had a minor eruption in 1910. The several small cones and craters seen in the vicinity probably reflect numerous episodes of volcanic activity.

Mount Meru is the topographic centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, and also monkeys and leopards.

Resting place of Noah's Ark

Some have suggested that Mount Meru was the place where Noah's Ark came to rest as the flood receded. According to this view, the old Arabic text of Genesis 8:4 identifies the resting place as "har-meni", which "refers to the mountain of Meni or Menes, another name for Mount Meru". The similarity between Har-meni and Armenia, however, led to the Christian tradition of identifying Mount Ararat, in Armenia, as the site.

Welcome back to the channel. Today will be just a brief piggyback video off a topic that Divergent channel has been discussing a lot lately: The Mythical Mount Meru. Today we are going to look at what the current narrative has to say, introduce you to “pyatthats” which I’ve seen on countless old world and ancient buildings (but never fully knew what they represented), and show you some great examples of these structures throughout the world. We will also talk about buildings which represent enlightenment. Mostly just photographs of amazing old world buildings with pyatthats. Essentially (as the narrative goes); Mount Meru was the center of the universe for the ancient Jain, Buddhist, and Hindu religions; it seemed to shape much of their culture and mythos, and was credited as having some pretty fascinating attributes. On the peak (apex) of Mount Meru was said to be Trayastrimsa (Heaven: literal translation; 33). We will take a look at old world buildings and artwork which depicts these ideas more thoroughly. The degree of Stillness (the ability to remain as nothing) determines the ability for anyone to 'travel' back up the structure towards the higher levels. Then, from the newly 'acquired' higher ground, one is able to look back down and grasp the structure of Reality from a higher perspective. All 'new' ground gained, can never really be lost. This is what we as individuals are 'engaged' in as fractals of the whole. This is called the accrual of Self-Knowledge. The 'end-result' is full recognition of the entire structure of Eternity (aka coming home/enlightenment/freedom/liberation/unification with God, etc, etc)

Welcome back to the channel. Today will be just a brief piggyback video off a topic that Divergent channel has been discussing a lot lately: The Mythical Mount Meru. Today we are going to look at what the current narrative has to say, introduce you to “pyatthats” which I’ve seen on countless old world and ancient buildings (but never fully knew what they represented), and show you some great examples of these structures throughout the world. We will also talk about buildings which represent enlightenment. Mostly just photographs of amazing old world buildings with pyatthats. Essentially (as the narrative goes); Mount Meru was the center of the universe for the ancient Jain, Buddhist, and Hindu religions; it seemed to shape much of their culture and mythos, and was credited as having some pretty fascinating attributes. On the peak (apex) of Mount Meru was said to be Trayastrimsa (Heaven: literal translation; 33). We will take a look at old world buildings and artwork which depicts these ideas more thoroughly. Looking up, the ignorance veils the higher levels. The degree of Stillness (the ability to remain as nothing) determines the ability for anyone to 'travel' back up the structure towards the higher levels. Then, from the newly 'acquired' higher ground, one is able to look back down and grasp the structure of Reality from a higher perspective. All 'new' ground gained, can never really be lost. This is what we as individuals are 'engaged' in as fractals of the whole. This is called the accrual of Self-Knowledge. The 'end-result' is full recognition of the entire structure of Eternity (aka coming home/enlightenment/freedom/liberation/unification with God, etc, etc)

Ancient Buddhist, Vedic and Jain standard cosmologies mention that at the North Pole magnetic center of the Planet is a hill of magnetite called Mount Meru. The Puranic as well as Sumerian traditions additionally mentioned this "Mount Sumeru." Mount Meru (also Sumeru (Sanskrit) or Sineru (Pāli) or Kangrinboqe) is the name of the central world-mountain in Buddhist cosmology. Etymologically, the proper name of the mountain is Meru (Pāli Neru), to which is added the approbatory prefix su-, resulting in the meaning "excellent Meru" or "wonderful Meru".

The concept of Sumeru is closely related to the Hindu mythological concept of a central world mountain, called Meru, but differs from the Hindu concept in several particulars.

Characteristics

According to Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakośabhāṣyam, Sumeru is 80,000 yojanas tall. The exact measure of the yojana is uncertain, but some accounts put it at about 24,000 feet, or approximately 4-1/2 miles, but other accounts put it at about 7-9 miles. It also descends beneath the surface of the surrounding waters to a depth of 80,000 yojanas, being founded upon the basal layer of Earth. Sumeru is often used as a simile for both size and stability in Buddhist texts.
