The Mossi Kingdoms, sometimes referred to as the Mossi Empire, were a number of different powerful kingdoms in modern-day Burkina Faso which dominated the region of the upper Volta river for hundreds of years. The kingdoms were founded when warriors from the Dagomba area, in modern-day Ghana moved into the area and intermarried with local people. Centralization of the political and military powers of the kingdoms begin in the 13th century and led to conflicts between the Mossi kingdoms and many of the other powerful states in the region. In 1896, the French took over the kingdoms and created the French Upper Volta which largely used the Mossi administrative structure for many decades in governing the colony.

A Conversation with Naaba Sagha, Mogho Naaba (Emperor) of the Mossi Kingdom
In November 2009, Scholastique Kompaoré, Brenda Gael McSweeney, and Peter (Pierre) Kazoni met with the last interim reigning emperor of the Mossi Kingdom in Burkina Faso. Naaba Sagha, born 11 May 1947, was installed on the throne at age eleven, then hidden away in a neighboring vicinity for her personal safety. To this day, she continues to retain many traditional powers. She created a solidarity group for women in her village. In the video, she is speaking in Mooré, the language of the Mossi people, about women whom she admires. In this film clip, she is stating that she has great respect for women of faith. Her conversation is translated into French by her son. She then went on to indicate that she has great admiration for the so-called 'ordinary' women of Burkina.
