NCSA Mosaic : The first graphical Web browser, 25 years later. A "Cooking With Linux" quickie!
Back before Facebook, Twitter, and Google, and long before Microsoft and Apple were the (ahem) apples of so many eyes, a nascent World Wide Web served as a golden beacon of interconnected knowledge, a place where one piece of information led, via hyperlinks, to others. It was a grand project expressed in plain text document upon plain text document. As such, it was also a little monochromatic. Then, roughly 25 years ago, came NCSA Mosaic and with it, the glorious graphical Web! So, what is it like to surf the web with a web browser from 25 years ago? Spend some time with me and we'll find out. Is it time to give up all those fancy modern browsers and go back to a classic? Surely, things were better in the old days . . .

● Liked this video? Subscribe for more: http://mjd.yt/subscribe
In the early days of the world wide web, there was one browser that ruled them all: Netscape Navigator. But not long after the start of the new millennium, it's market share had drastically decreased. With the rise of Internet Explorer, Netscape found themselves in a fight that they couldn't win. Today's video details how this happened by discussing the browser wars, and the rise and fall of Netscape.

Its intuitive interface, reliability, personal computer support, and simple installation all contributed to its popularity within the web. In 1993, NCSA Mosaic, or simply Mosaic, is the web browser that popularized the World Wide Web and the Internet. It was also a client for earlier internet protocols such as File Transfer Protocol, Network News Transfer Protocol, and Gopher. The browser was named for its support of multiple internet protocols. Its intuitive interface, reliability, Windows portand simple installation all contributed to its popularity within the web, as well as on Microsoft operating systems. Mosaic was also the first browser to display images inline with text instead of displaying images in a separate window. While often described as the first graphical web browser, Mosaic was preceded by WorldWideWeb, the lesser-known Erwise and ViolaWWW Mosaic was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaignbeginning in late 1992. NCSA released the browser in 1993, and officially discontinued development and support on January 7, 1997. However, it can still be downloaded from NCSA.
Netscape Navigator was later developed by Netscape, which employed many of the original Mosaic authors; however, it intentionally shared no code with Mosaic. Netscape Navigator's code descendant is Mozilla Firefox. Starting in 1995 Mosaic lost market share to Netscape Navigator, and by 1997 only had a tiny fraction of users left, by which time the project was discontinued. Microsoft licensed Mosaic to create Internet Explorer in 1995.

NCSA Mosaic was one of the first web browsers. It was instrumental in popularizing the World Wide Web and the general Internet by integrating multimedia such as text and graphics. It is a client for earlier internet protocols such as File Transfer Protocol, Network News Transfer Protocol, and Gopher. It was named for its support of multiple Internet protocols. Its intuitive interface, reliability, personal computer support, and simple installation all contributed to its popularity within the web. Mosaic is the first browser to display images inline with text instead of in a separate window. It is often described as the first graphical web browser, though it was preceded by WorldWideWeb, the lesser-known Erwise, and ViolaWWW.
Mosaic was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign beginning in late 1992. NCSA released it in 1993, and officially discontinued development and support on January 7, 1997.Starting in 1995, Mosaic lost market share to Netscape Navigator and only had a tiny fraction of users left by 1997, when the project was discontinued. Microsoft licensed Mosaic to create Internet Explorer in 1995.
