Desert Island Discs is a talk show radio programme, broadcast on BBC Radio 4. It was first broadcast on the BBC Forces Programme on 29 January 1942.
Each week a guest, called a "castaway" during the programme, is asked to choose eight recordings (usually, but not always, music) a book and a luxury item that they would take if they were to be cast away on a desert island, whilst discussing their lives and the reasons for their choices. It was devised and originally presented by Roy Plomley. Since 2006, the show has been presented by Kirsty Young.
More than 3,000 episodes have been recorded, with some guests having appeared more than once and some episodes featuring more than one guest.
Format
Guests are invited to imagine themselves cast away on a desert island, and to choose eight recordings, originally gramophone records, to take with them; discussion of their choices permits a review of their life. Excerpts from their choices are played or, in the case of short pieces, the whole work. At the end of the programme they choose the one piece they regard most highly. Guests are also automatically given the Complete Works of Shakespeare and either the Bible or another appropriate religious or philosophical work. They are then asked which book, of their choice, they would like to take with them. Popular choices include Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. Actress Judi Dench, who suffers from macular degeneration, was permitted to take an audiobook in place of a printed manuscript.
Steven Patrick Morrissey (born 22 May 1959), commonly known by his last name, Morrissey, or by his nicknames, Moz or Mozza, is a British singer, lyricist, and author. He rose to prominence as the lyricist and vocalist of the indie rock band The Smiths, which was active from 1982 to 1987. Since then, Morrissey has had a solo career, making the top ten of the UK Singles Chart on ten occasions.
Born in Davyhulme, Lancashire to a working-class Irish migrant family, Morrissey grew up in Manchester. As a child he developed a love of literature, kitchen sink realism, and popular music. Involved in Manchester's punk rock scene during the late 1970s, he fronted two punk bands, The Nosebleeds and Slaughter & The Dogs, with little success. Beginning a career in music journalism, he authored a number of books on music and film in the early 1980s. With Johnny Marr he established The Smiths in 1982, soon attracting national attention for their self-titled debut album. As the band's frontman, Morrissey attracted attention both for his intelligent, witty, and sardonic lyrics and his idiosyncratic appearance; deliberately avoiding rock machismo, he cultivated the aesthetic of a social outsider who eschewed drugs and embraced celibacy. The Smiths released five further albums – including the critically acclaimed Meat is Murder and The Queen is Dead– and had a string of hit singles. Personal differences between Morrissey and Marr resulted in The Smiths' separation in 1987.
ONLY chat, with Lauren Laverne, Cillian Murphy shares the soundtrack of his life.

Lyrics
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
What she asked of me at the end of the day
Caligula would have blushed
"Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said
And I naturally fled
In my life
Why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
"Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said
And I naturally fled
In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?

The actor recalls his time living in America and turning down the director Steven Spielberg for a part in the film Empire of the Sun to pursue his theatre work. He has won multiple awards including oscars and was made a knight of the realm in 2017. This is an edited version of the interview which is only a snapshot of this man's career, with added music, Please leave comments if you so wish.
Great interview with the two time oscar winner Jack Lemmon where he talks to Sue Lawley about his early life and being born in a lift. He talks about making the film Some Like It Hot and does an uncanny impersonation of Billy Wilder, who directed the film. He reveals his love of Dixieland Jazz and how music plays an important part in his life. He recalls going for dinner at the White House with his wife Felicia with President Reagan and Nancy Reagan. This is an edited version of the interview with added music from his films. Please leave comments if you so wish.
Insightful interview with the actor Tom Hanks where he reflects on his early life and moving around the States due to his father's job. He reveals how he learnt about the history of the second world war and he talks about his feelings of loneliness. Kirsty Young manages to delve deepen into Tom's feelings and at a pause in the audio Tom is unable to respond, intially, to Kirsty's question. A rare unguarded moment from Tom Hanks but he is able to gather his thoughts and carry on with the interview. He explains the illusion of fame and reveals he has Type 2 Diabetes and was advised by a doctor not to retire. He talks about his friendship with Stephen Spielberg and their working agreement they had whilst filming Saving Private Ryan. This is an extended version of the interview with added music from his films and others. Please leave comments if you so wish.

Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now was released as a single before being included on the compilation album "Hatful of Hollow".
Lyrics
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
What she asked of me at the end of the day
Caligula would have blushed
"Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said
And I naturally fled
In my life
Why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
"Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said
And I naturally fled
In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?

We can plant a seed And watch it grow Food enough to fill a table Running water down an overflow Eat as much as we are able But would the fruit turn ripe If the rains had never been? Chorus: Oh Lord deliver us from the elements We at your mercy and your reverence Oh Lord deliver us from the elements We've no defense we are impotent You can travel far to distant lands Some so hot no man could bear You can conquer peaks with winds of sand Where Mother Nature didn't care Would not our world turn cold If the sun refused to shine Chorus And when the world grows old And we know more than our brains can hold Nature will be law Well we're as helpless now as we've ever been before Would not our world turn cold If the sun refused to shine Chorus
