📍 Morphine is a plant alkaloid isolated from the latex of opium poppy. Morphine is a centrally acting opioid analgesic and mu-opioid receptor agonist. Side effects of morphine include: nausea, vomiting, confusion, delirium, and diaphoresis.
📍 Morphine is conjugated with glucuronic acid in the liver to two active metabolites. Metabolite M3G has no analgesic action, but can be neuro-excitatory. Metabolite M6G is two to four times more potent than parent drug; accumulation can cause over sedation and respiratory depression. In the end, Morphine not recommended as a first-line treatment for pain associated with acute coronary syndrome due to increased risk of myocardial infarction.
