Mordecai Richler on The Literary Life - The John Adams Institute
On November 25, 1998, The John Adams Institute presented a special Canadian guest, Mordecai Richler, who discussed his novel Barney’s Vision. In Barney’s Vision, the main character, Barney Panovsky, is forced to write his memoirs when a sworn enemy threatens to publish a biography riddled with accusations, including murder. In a racy voice, Barney vents his gall about feminists, anti-smoking activists, and others in a blend of realism and satire. From his writings it becomes clear that he is aging and somewhat addled, a wonderfully realistic trait which Richler uses well. Richler wrote novels, short stories, children’s books and film scripts. Richler was born in Montreal and great up in an Eastern European immigrant neighborhood which was a great inspiration for many of his novels. He rece...

Mordecai Richler unveils the Prix Parizeau literary award
"Le Prix Parizeau"
Before a crowd of reporters at an impromptu press conference at a local pub, Mordecai Richler unveils the Prix Parizeau literary award. The contest is open to ethnic Québecois and the prize is $3000 and a framed caricature of Jacques Parizeau by artist Terry Mosher. The initiative of the Impur Laine Society, of which Richler is the president, is a response to Parizeau's assertions that the Quebec referendum was lost due to money and the ethnic vote. "I'm responding with ridicule," Richler explains. "I think ridicule is much more appropriate than anger."

Extraordinary Canadians - Mordecai Richler
Author Mordecai Richler had a voice all his own and until his death in 2001, he continued to create original protagonists struggling to find morality and redemption in a corrupt world. His first novel “The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz” was published in 1959 and turned into an award-winning film of the same name. Although author M.G. Vassanji and Richler share different cultural roots, they both regard themselves as outsiders in their respective societies.

Mordecai Richler was one of Canada's great men of letters and one of its most acerbic celebrities. Scripted by Richler's new biographer, writer Charlie Foran, in collaboration with the film's director, Francine Pelletier, the film looks at Mordecai Richler, the man and the writer, in a new way, as one of a generation of gifted, angry Jewish writers and intellectuals who dominated much of North American culture from the '50s to the end of the century: Saul Bellow, Irving Layton, Lenny Bruce, Philip Roth, Norman Mailer and others.
