Moonlighting Was Immediately Canceled After This Happened
Did you know that Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd had romantic tension on the set of Moonlighting, and did you know that this romantic tension grew into a bitter feud? The 1985 romantic comedy television series Moonlighting made Bruce Willis a star and revitalized the career of actress Cybill Shepherd after a lull in the early part of the decade. Cybill had been a film star during the 1970s, and she had developed a bit of a diva mentality. This diva mentality clashed with Bruce’s more laid-back demeanor. However, Bruce started acting like a diva himself by the show’s end.

What Happened to Moonlighting (1985-1989)?
With Bruce Willis’ recent, tragic frontotemporal dementia diagnosis revealed, we here at JoBlo thought the time was right to celebrate the show that made him a star, Moonlighting, in which he co-starred with Cybill Shepherd. At the time, Willis was a complete unknown, with only a one-episode guest starring role as a bad guy on Miami Vice to show for his early years in Hollywood. All that changed when the creators of Moonlighting were looking for a fresh face to play a wisecracking private eye named David Addison. On the show, he would be paired with Cybill Shepherd, who was then already a pretty big star thanks to a run of movies in the seventies that included The Last Picture Show and Taxi Driver. In this, she would play a former model who, after having her fortune embezzled, discovers sh...

Why You Never Hear From Cybill Shepherd Anymore
In the 1980s, it looked like Cybill Shepherd’s star could only go up. The former model had successfully transitioned her career to the big screen, nabbing roles in critically acclaimed films like 1971’s “The Last Picture Show” and 1976’s “Taxi Driver” before landing a lead in ABC’s comedy-drama “Moonlighting” opposite Bruce Willis.
But on-set turmoil and a poor reputation seemed to tarnish the actor’s career, and it’s been years since Shepherd has appeared in anything of note. Curious to know exactly what went down in this star’s once shining career? This is why you never hear from Cybill Shepherd anymore.

Moonlighting is an American television series that aired on ABC from March 3, 1985, to May 14, 1989. Starring Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis as private detectives, the show was a mixture of drama, comedy, and romance, and was considered to be one of the first successful and influential examples of comedy-drama, or "dramedy", emerging as a distinct television genre.
The show's theme song was performed by jazz singer Al Jarreau and became a hit. The show is also credited with making Willis a star, while re-launching the career of Shepherd after a string of lackluster projects. In 1997, the episode "The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice" was ranked #34 on TV Guide's 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time. In 2007, the series was listed as one of Time magazine's "100 Best TV Shows of All-Time." The relationship between David and Maddie was included in TV Guide 's list of the best TV couples of all time.
The series revolved around cases investigated by the Blue Moon Detective Agency and its two partners, Madelyn "Maddie" Hayes (Shepherd) and David Addison Jr. (Willis). The show, with a mix of mystery, sharp dialogue, and sexual tension between its two leads, introduced Bruce Willis to the world and brought Cybill Shepherd back into the spotlight after a nearly decade-long absence.
The characters were introduced in a two-hour pilot episode that preceded the series proper. The show's storyline begins with the reversal of fortune of Maddie Hayes, a former model who finds herself bankrupt after her accountant embezzles all of her liquid assets. She is left saddled with several failing businesses formerly maintained as tax write-offs, one of which is the City of Angels Detective Agency, helmed by the carefree David Addison.
Between the pilot and the first one-hour episode, David persuades Maddie to keep the business and run it as a partnership. The agency is renamed Blue Moon Investigations because Maddie was most famous for being the spokesmodel for the (fictitious) Blue Moon Shampoo Company. In many episodes, she was recognized as "the Blue Moon shampoo girl," if not by name.

Cybill was hired onto Moonlighting first, and she read with nearly 20 actors before Bruce auditioned. Cybill felt the chemistry immediately, and Bruce was subsequently hired onto the show to be her costar. During the early days of the show’s production, Cybill reportedly initiated a romantic encounter between the two that ended with them making out at the actress’s house after sharing a bottle of wine. Before things got too far, the two decided to keep things professional.
Although Bruce and Cybill had apparently agreed amicably not to pursue a romantic relationship, this unresolved tension may have played a part in the two starting to not get along over the course of the show’s filming. By the end of the show’s run, Bruce and Cybill could hardly look each other in the eye. In addition to issues with the show’s writing and budget, this feud led to its cancellation. In this, she would play a former model who, after having her fortune embezzled, discovers she owns a low-rent detective agency run by Willis’ Addison.
There are a lot of reasons Moonlighting took off in the eighties, but the primary one was the “will they or won’t they” sexual tension between the two leads. While they notoriously feuded off-camera, on the small screen, they were electric. Willis’ affable, wise-guy personality also made him a sex symbol, the guy all women wanted to be with and all guys wanted to be. It would lead to him being cast in the film that made him a superstar, Die Hard, and looking back at Moonlighting, and it’s amazing to see how fully formed he was when the show began.
In this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten, which is written by Jessica Dwyer, edited by Cesar Gabriel, narrated by Travis Hopson and produced by Dave Arroyo, we dig into Moonlighting’s best moments (such as the famous “Atomic Shakespeare” episode) and reveal why it’s so hard to find on streaming services.
