Montmartre (French pronunciation:[mɔ̃.maʁtʁ]) is a large hill in Paris's 18th arrondissement. It is 130 metres high and gives its name to the surrounding district, part of the Right Bank in the northern section of the city. The historic district established by the City of Paris in 1995 is bordered by rue Caulaincourt and rue Custine on the north; rue de Clignancourt on the east; boulevard de Clichy and boulevard de Rochechouart to the south. containing sixty hectares. Montmartre is primarily known for the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur on its summit and as a nightclub district. The other, older, church on the hill is Saint Pierre de Montmartre, which claims to be the location at which the Jesuit order of priests was founded.
The Montmartre paintings are a group of works that Vincent van Gogh made in 1886 and 1887 of the Paris district of Montmartre while living there with his brother Theo. Rather than capture urban settings in Paris, van Gogh preferred pastoral scenes, such as Montmartre and Asnières in the northwest suburbs. Of the two years in Paris, the work from 1886 often has the dark, somber tones of his early works from the Netherlands and Brussels. By the spring of 1887 van Gogh embraced use of color and light and created his own brushstroke techniques based upon Impressionism and Pointillism. The works in the series provide examples of his work during that period of time and the progression he made as an artist.
Café Montmartre (now Montmartre Lounge) was a restaurant and nightclub on Hollywood Boulevard at Highland Avenue in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US. Opened in 1923, it became a "worldwide center for celebrity and nightlife" during the 1920s and a place where tourists would visit to try to break into Hollywood.
History
In 1919, Charles E. Toberman bought the property at 6763 Hollywood Boulevard, and three years later, built a real estate office on the lot. The building, run by Meyer & Holler, included a first floor bank and Café Montmartre on the second floor. Café Montmartre was the first popular nightclub on the boulevard after Adolph 'Eddie' Brandstatter opened it in 1923. Given the dramatic growth of the American film industry in Hollywood at the time, it became a "worldwide center for celebrity and nightlife" during the 1920s. Gregory Paul Williams, author of The Story of Hollywood: An Illustrated History, describes it as the first successful café in Hollywood, stating that it became "the most publicized cafe in the country, where a bottle of booze was a sure thing, as was gambling in the back room".

Montmartre Is The Heart Of Paris
Montmartre is full of Parisian charm and character. Perched above the city on a high hill, its most iconic landmark is the Sacré-Cœur basilica. You can see its white domes from far across the city and it's here you find perhaps the best view of Paris. This site has long been a site of worship, but Montmartre is more associated now with its art scene and nightlife. There was a time when a massive group of the world's most famous artists lived in Montmartre and had studios here: Monet, Renoir, Degas, Picasso, Van Gogh, Mondrian, Modigliani, and Toulouse-Lautrec (who painted those now iconic posters of the Moulin Rouge). Don't miss Place du Tertre where you'll still find artists congregated to work and sell their art. Nowadays, Montmartre is also forever known as the setting to the beloved mo...

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Over four years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: https://youtu.be/-MrvL37jTKM
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: http://bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: https://youtu.be/4Vivf6MqMxQ
Do you speak French? - Oui. https://youtu.be/va1QjaHgij8
Do you make money off YouTube? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: http://patreon.com/jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): https://ko-fi.com/jayswanson
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
Thanks for watching!

Nowadays, Montmartre is also forever known as the setting to the beloved movie Amélie.

Despite being Dutch, Vincent Van Gogh is perhaps more well-known for the paintings he created whilst in France. In the two years he spent living in Paris with his brother Theo, Vincent developed his own unique style and socialised with several famous artists of that time.
In this tour, we will walk around Montmartre and see some of the places Vincent visited and the views that he painted. We will see where he drew his inspiration and also where he liked to relax. If the weather is good, we should end with a beautiful sunset with a view over Paris, and create our own m...

Rare Van Gogh masterpiece 'Street Scene in Montmartre' sells for $15.4 million
A rare Van Gogh masterpiece was sold at auction last week for 15-point-4 million U.S. dollars...much higher than its estimated price of some 6 million dollars.
The sale of 'Street Scene in Montmartre' was highly anticipated... as it had remained behind closed doors for a HUNDRED years in one French family's private collection...before it was first revealed to the public.
The painting depicts a man and woman, strolling arm-in-arm past a ramshackle fence with a windmill in the background.
Painted in 1887, it's part of a series of scenes depicting Montmartre that the artist created while he was staying in Paris.

If the weather is good, we should end with a beautiful sunset with a view over Paris, and create our own modern ‘postcard’ masterpiece.
So come with me to Paris and follow in Vincent’s footsteps.

Montmartre is one of my favorite areas and the most artistic district in Paris. In this video, I'll share with you the things you need to know if you are planning your trip to Montmartre.
Today we're climbing the highest hill in Paris. But obviously, we're not going straight up it - instead, I'm taking a deliberately wiggly route to try and find some things you might not have seen before...
Walking route here: https://goo.gl/maps/TBrHSYLT1KkvR3obA
I made this video as part of the #MediocreMountainChallenge, climbing the highest point in my local area. You can join in too! Find out more here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkCVqLsjHL4

My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Montmartre, then you’ve come to the right place. In this Montmartre travel guide, we’ll share with you the top attractions, must-sees, as well as some hidden gems.
The 18th arrondissement is one of my favourite districts in paris and it’s the number one destination I recommend visiting in the city. Best seen over the course of a few hours, Montmartre has a true village feel and was once the haunt of many famous artists and painters, including Renoir, Vincent Van Gogh, and Picasso.
Today you can wander around the cobbled lanes, visit centuries old churches, visit a working Parisian vineyard, and relax in gorgeous green spaces.

Nowadays, Montmartre is also forever known as the setting to the beloved movie Amélie.

If the weather is good, we should end with a beautiful sunset with a view over Paris, and create our own modern ‘postcard’ masterpiece.
So come with me to Paris and follow in Vincent’s footsteps.
