Montserrat (/mɒntsəˈræt/) is a Caribbean island—specifically in the Leeward Islands, which is part of the chain known as the Lesser Antilles, in the British West Indies. It is a British Overseas Territory. Montserrat measures approximately 16km (10mi) long and 11km (7mi) wide, with approximately 40km (25mi) of coastline. Montserrat is nicknamed The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants.
On 18 July 1995, the previously dormantSoufrière Hillsvolcano, in the southern part of the island, became active. Eruptions destroyed Montserrat's Georgian era capital city of Plymouth. Between 1995 and 2000, two-thirds of the island's population was forced to flee, primarily to the United Kingdom. The volcanic activity continues, mostly affecting the vicinity of Plymouth, including its docking facilities, and the eastern side of the island around the former W. H. Bramble Airport, the remnants of which were buried by flows from volcanic activity on 11 February 2010.
Montserrat is a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, originally named after the Virgin of Montserrat, itself named after the Montserrat mountain in Catalonia. In Catalan, the name means "serrated mountain".

Mark Knopfler performing a great version of "Money for Nothing" during "Music for Montserrat", live from Royal Albert Hall, London - 15 September 1997.
Mark Knopfler - vocals, guitar
Eric Clapton - guitar

Guy Fletcher - keyboards
Phil Palmer - guitar
Phil Collins - drums
Ray Cooper - percussion
On the evening of September 15, 1997, legendary British music producer George Martin (who had risen to prominence with the Beatles) held a benefit concert at London's Royal Albert Hall for the small Caribbean island of Montserrat, which had recently been devastated by a volcanic eruption. All of the invited superstars had recorded some of their biggest hits at Montserrat's Air Studios, which Martin had founded in 1970, and this shared history gives Music for Montserrat an added sense of enjoyment among friends. Despite a few vocal dropouts and forgivable mixing problems, this outstanding concert has been captured with impressive fidelity, and while each artist performs songs appropriate to the occasion, they share the stage (along with a house band, choir, and orchestra conducted by Martin) in brilliant combinations that bring out the best in everyone involved.
The show hits full stride with Mark Knopfler's exquisite "Brothers in Arms," which segues nicely into "Money for Nothing" with guest vocals by Sting, who then performs two hits from his Police years. And while Elton John and Eric Clapton form the centerpiece of the concert (especially Clapton and Knopfler's acoustic "Layla"), by which time Music for Montserrat had given its royal audience a show they would never forget.
Enjoy!

The rack railway ends directly at the Montserrat Monastery at an altitude of 725 meters. The massive monastery nestles directly against the rock walls like an eagle's nest, while the bizarre rock needles rise into the sky above, a fantastic view. From here you have an breathtaking view of the Catalan hinterland and as far as Barcelona, where you can clearly see Tibidabo, Barcelona's local mountain. The monastery of Montserrat itself is architecturally nothing special; the unique panoramic location and the wonderful rocky backdrop into which the walls were built are impressive.
The monastery was built between 1025 and 1035. The main features of today's monastery complex date from the 15th century. In 1811 the monastery was largely destroyed by Napoleonic troops and then rebuilt in a more functional style. At the time of the Franco dictatorship, the monastery resisted. Despite the ban, Catalan continued to be spoken there and masses were held in Catalan. Many of those persecuted by the Franco regime were hidden here. More than 20 monks were executed because of this. This resistance makes the monastery today an important symbol of Catalan independence and the fight against oppression. There is also a museum with works by well-known artists such as Monet, El Greco and Dali as well as archaeological and liturgical exhibits.
The main religious attraction is the black madonna, which was found in the 12th century and is said to have performed miracles and is now the patron saint of Catalonia. The madonna is still the destination of pilgrimages today. It towers over the high altar in the monastery's basilica. In her honor, around 50 choir boys from the monastery's boarding school sing church songs every day. We stand in line for the visit to the Black Madonna. This winds its way very slowly through the side rooms of the basilica and we need a lot of patience until we finally stand in front of the legendary figure.
But actually from our point of view not the monastery is the highlight, but the landscape that surrounds it! As if out of nowhere, the mighty mountain range of Montserrat rises from the plain and reaches a height of 1236 meters at the summit of Sant Jeroni. The rugged mountain landscape with rugged peaks and bizarre rock formations exudes a fascination that is difficult to resist. We take the “Funicular de Sant Joan” cable car up to the mountain station at an altitude of 970 meters. From here you can hike up to the highest peak, Sant Jeroni, in about an hour. Unfortunately we only make it to the hermitage of Sant Joan because the visit to the black madonna took us more time than expected. But this short hike also offers great views and exciting paths between rock faces and abysses. This mountain landscape is a hiking paradise. The further you go, the quieter it becomes. A stark contrast to the lively city of Barcelona and also the heavily visited monastery!

This wonderful 1987 video, capturing Freddie Mercury's unforgettable collaboration with Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballé, accompanied the very first single from the 'Barcelona' album (which was to follow a full year later). This unexpected and unlikely merging of talent took the world by storm, and this was the first of three singles released from the album. The Director was David Mallet and it was filmed at Pinewood Studios in London. The single was released in the UK on 26th October 1987.

Freddie Mercury was a man of many talents and many different sides. The songs he wrote for and with Queen filled stadiums around the globe and have rightly gone down in history, but he also embarked on a solo career that took him from the clubs of Munich and New York to the great opera houses of the world.
He was the ultimate showman, but he kept his private life away from the prying eyes of the media; a larger than life rock star who loved disco, classical music and ballet. He was a restless spirit, a true chameleon who revelled in his own contradictions.
All the different sides of this iconic musician can be found on Freddie Mercury: Messenger Of The Gods - The Singles. All formats released September 2nd 2016.

Mark Knopfler performing a great version of "Money for Nothing" during "Music for Montserrat", live from Royal Albert Hall, London - 15 September 1997.
Mark Knopfler - vocals, guitar
Eric Clapton - guitar
Sting - backing vocals
Enjoy!
Montserrat is an overseas territory in the Caribbean. But did you know that they have a capital with a population of 0? I explain why the capital of Plymouth has no people living and what happened to it.

A Radharc report from 1976 about the Black Irish of Montserrat. Irish people exiled by Cromwell and African slaves arrived on Montserrat at about the same time.
Today we visit the famous Montserrat Monastery. The Benedictine monastery is the Catalan national shrine and lies in a wild and majestic mountain landscape. It is one of the most visited destinations in the hinterland of Barcelona.
To travel from Barcelona to Montserrat we take the train. From Plaça d'Espanya train station, the R5 train leaves every 20 to 40 minutes. At the “Monistrol de Montserrat” station we change to the “Cremallera de Montserrat” rack railway, which takes us directly up to the monastery. Even this 15-minute ride is a first highlight with great views of the rugged sandstone mountains. The entire journey from Barcelona to Montserrat takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing alleluia; Christ the Savior, is born! Christ the Savior, is born! Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love's pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
