New York’s Mohawk tribe works to restore their culture
For decades, Native American children were forcibly removed from their families and lands to attend boarding schools where English was mandatory and their own languages were forbidden. But in 1979, a small Mohawk tribe in upstate New York formed The Akwesasne Freedom School, where today Mohawk children continue to learn their native language and culture. Special correspondent Jenna Flanagan reports.

The Real History Behind the Mohawk/Mohican Hairstyle
The Mohawk/Mohican is after long, braided hair, perhaps the most frequently portrayed hairstyles for historical Native Americans, but is this accurate? In today's video I explore the history of the Mohawk and Mohican people, as well as another tribe, the Plains-dwelling Pawnee of Dances with Wolves fame, before looking at the naming practice for the hairstyle and why this sometimes differs on both sides of the Atlantic.

Today's Daily Dose short history film covers Mohawk Skywalkers, who are members of a Native American tribe who build bridges and skyscrapers. The filmmaker has included the original voice over script to further assist your understanding:
Today on The Daily Dose, Mohawk Skywalkers.
Long accustomed to traveling away from home for hunting, fur trading and logging, Mohawk Skywalkers from the Six nations Reserve and Akwesasne (Ak weh sisson) in northern New York State and southeastern Canada began building skyscrapers and bridges as far back as 1886, when daring Mohawk men helped in the construction of the Victoria Bridge across the St. Lawrence River. Over the years, Mohawk ironworkers have shown an uncanny aptitude for working steel beams at increasingly-higher altitudes, talking to each other for their mutual safety in their native language, as they helped to build such iconic landmarks as the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Plaza and the original World Trade Towers.
The Skywalker tradition almost came to an early end, when in 1907, 33 Mohawk men died during the collapse of the Quebec Bridge outside Quebec City, leaving behind wives and children to mourn their sudden passing. The tragedy taught surviving Skywalkers to split up into riveting gangs, so that any future disaster would minimize their losses as a tribe.
By the 1960s, the Atlantic Avenue and Boerum Hill area of Brooklyn—known as Kahnawake (kaa nuh wake)—became home to some 800 Mohawk Skywalkers and their families, as they built skyscrapers as far afield as Ontario, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco.
The Skywalker tradition has been passed down through generations of Mohawk men, allowing fathers and grandfathers to teach sons and grandsons how to control their fears and work in highly-effective teams that were once known as riveting gangs. Although modern technology has changed the way Skywalkers work, original riveting gangs were made up of four Skywalkers per gang. One man—known as the “heater”—would fire rivets in a portable forge until they glowed red, tossing them to the “sticker-in” man, who caught the red-hot rivet in a metal can or glove. The “bucker-up” braced the rivet with a dolly bar, while the “riveter” used a pneumatic hammer to flatten out the rivet stem, which locked a beam into place. Working without safety lines or helmets until more recent times, even to this day, 35 to 50 ironworkers fall to their death each year. In the Kahnawake cemetery in Brooklyn, steel girder crosses mark the graves of fallen Skywalkers, offering a final tribute and resting place to the brave men who helped build America.
And there you have it, Mohawk Skywalkers, today on The Daily Dose.

"Mohawks of Kahnawà:ke'" are a Mohawk First Nation in Quebec, Canada. Their main reserve is Kahnawake 14, located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, opposite Montreal. They also share the uninhabited reserve of Doncaster 17 with the Mohawks of Kanesatake, for hunting and fishing. The band is governed by the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke. The Mohawks of Kahnawá:ke, (Kahnawákeró:non), are an ancient People, with a vibrant culture and rich history. We are one of the eight communities that make up the Mohawk (Kanien:keha'ka) Nation and have historic, political and cultural ties based on Honor, Trust and Respect to the Oneida, Seneca, Onondaga, Cayuga and Tuscarora Nations of the Northeastern part of North America. In ancient times, these Nations achieved a major and innovative development, by forming a Confederacy and devising a system of governance known as: the "Great Law of Peace". In all of the world's history, there are very few examples of such a coming together of Nations for the purpose of peace. The formation of the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Confederacy is one of them.

Here's What Downtown Portland, Oregon Looks Like Now
A downtown tour of Portland shows some real surprises!
So here we are in downtown Portland Oregon. You’ve probably heard that Portland has a lot of challenges, and is being run by a terrible liberal government that turns its back on crime and vandalism and homelessness. Those are all true. Portland suffers from mismanagement, and has for years now, and because of that lots of bad people are coming and lots of good people are leaving.
Say what you want about Portland’s politics and crime, but it IS a really pretty and charming place, despite a lot of the damage that’s been done by vandals and the homeless stain on the city. And on this drive, we’re going to take a tour through a lot of downtown Portland. We’re lucky, because the day I chose this drive was a nice one. It was evening in la...

TOP 10 PLACES TO VISIT ON THE OREGON COAST - 4K TRAVEL GUIDE
I grew up on The Oregon Coast north of Cannon Beach and south of Astoria in one of the best beach towsn of Seaside, Oregon, and its easily one of my favorite places in the whole world and is home to some of the most dramatic and beautiful coasts on earth from the giant sand dunes to the offshore rock stacks - it has it all. Since I grew up in Seaside and Cannon Beach (northern), I figured I would make this travel guide for exploring the Oregon Coast is very special to me. The Oregon Coast is part of the 7 wonders of Oregon, and even though I am biased, I think it's the best one ;) I've driven every mile of HWY 101 from California to Washington and I wish that I had explored more of every beach, rock stack hike along the Whole coastline, but I will travel Oregon for the rest of my life. The rythmic structure of "western" stile and rock succeed each other. This is leading to the slow movement, where the signals of horns and trumpets introduce a wonderful vocal melody. After this characteristic melody, the fast movement appears shortly again, the trombones whistling the steam-flute again (now in major). We hear also some musical elements, that plays a part in the following Presto. Barchanges, jazzy chords, interesting rhytmic patterns (with bongo) and an original theme are the characteristics of this Presto. After this, the horns announce the last section of the piece. Interesting is the fact that we hear in this Allegro section a variant of the vocal melody in the slow movement. Also the Presto theme returns shortly, followed by the Allargando, which is a grand characteristic end of a soundtrack. The movie of our travelling fantasy has come to an end.

This fantasy tells the story of Oregon, one of America's north-western states. Traveling by train on the Northern Pacific Railroad, the listener is taken through the fascinating Oregon landscape. Indians, cowboys, golddiggers and hooded wagons will file past on this adventurous journey. The piece has some similarities with a soundtrack of a movie. Various melodies, which could be the main themes of a movie, pass the review. The piece begins in a slow movement, introducing the first theme in minor.
It was evening in late October, right when the city’s maple trees were beginning to fall, creating a neat orange carpet.
Now I know you came to see the homeless tents, and we'll get to that part and we'll see the part of town that's in tatters from the looting too. But I have to say, while driving around downtown Portland I was surprised that the city wasn’t as destroyed or chaotic or overrun with tents like I had thought it would be. Oh I mean it was a thing, but it wasn’t as BAD as you hear about on the news. At least when I was here.
On this drive you’ll see a lot of windows broken out and graffiti and homeless people. But Portland has had some time to recover from the seemingly endless protests, where a holes battled with the cops and ruined a big chunk of downtown. The city is also actively trying to clean up all the bum poop and the needles and has begun to push some of the homeless encampments out of downtown and into surrounding areas.
Here’s where all the rioting happens that you see on TV. Based on news reports, you’d think that the whole city was up in flames and gutted out. But it’s actually just in one small part of downtown that’s about 5 blocks long. And until there’s another overreaction to something that happens here, this riot zone is pretty peaceful and quiet. Too bad it can’t stay this way all the time, but vandals and criminals and idiots can’t seem to remain civil. They’ll jack this part of town up again, sadly.
This is where a big part of the homeless gather downtown. It’s in an area off of Burnside, near Portland’s Chinatown. These blocks and blocks of downtown have been overtaken by tents, and it's an area that kind of ruins a whole section of downtown. When I was here, it was all mostly contained to one area.
Don’t get me wrong - the homeless spill out into the surrounding blocks and leave trash everywhere and harass people and cause issues. And almost all bathrooms in the area have a keypad to get in to prevent homeless people from using area bathrooms to do what homeless people do in there. But it’s not really that dangerous here in downtown’s tent city. At least to me. Sure it looks bad, but I walked around in this area at night and it was actually pretty quiet. It was like the homeless people were all given sedatives or something. And the maple leaves on the sidewalk certainly helped to cover up a lot of the grimy homeless mess, too.
You can see a lot more of this in another video I did that only covered Portland’s homeless problem. And when you drive around into other parts of the city, it’s clear that it is a BIG
problem.

There are many places to visit along the Oregon Coast, but so much conflicting information. This travel guide in 4K is an overview of my top 10 Places & Cities to visit along the whole Oregon Coast.
