Mohammed Ahmad Ghulam Rabbani arrived at Guantanamo on September 20, 2004, and
has been held there for
11years,4monthsand27days.
He had spent approximately two years in the CIA's network of secret black site torture camps, prior to his transfer to Guantanamo.
Background
Rabbani was born in Saudi Arabia to a Pakistani family who migrated to Karachi from India during the partition in 1947. He learned to speak Arabic while growing up in Saudi Arabia. Rabbani eventually moved back to Karachi where he worked as a taxi driver during the 1990s. Due to his fluency in Arabic, his clientele included Arabs visiting the city, and he became a referred driver and guide for them. He married in 2001 and had a son, whom he has never seen and only came to learn of during custody, when his son was six years old. Rabbani has written that he was handed over to American authorities because his crime was that he "spoke Arabic" and that he was accused of being one of them. He has also written on the torture he has endured during captivity in Afghanistan and Guantanamo.
Pakistani artist asks US military to return the artwork he painted in Guantanamo • FRANCE 24
Ahmed Rabbani was released from Guantanamo in February 2023 along with his brother Abdul after spending 20 years imprisoned in the infamous detention centre. Rabbani, a Pakistani national born in Saudi Arabia who returned to Pakistan two months ago, is calling on the US to give him back a number of artworks he painted during his time in detention that he said denounced the torture he suffered at the hands of his captors. The paintings were confiscated by the US military on the grounds that they were “a threat to national security”. The two brothers, 55 and 53 respectively, have never been tried and no charges have been brought against them.

6. SOUNDBITE (Urdu) Ahmed Rabbani, former Guantanamo Bay prisoner:
"They (U.S. officials) didn't provide us with any painting materials. In the last three to four years, the guards would give us just one color at a time. They would then take it back and give us another color, but never more than one color at a time."
7. Various of visitors looking at artwork on display
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Amra Khan, artist:
"When I started looking at his work, the way he applied the work, the way he expressed it, the choice of colors, the fact that he is someone who did not have a proper art education from an institute, it is exceptional for someone to eloquently express the kind of trauma that they went through onto a surface in the way that he has."
9. Various of people looking at artwork
10. Rabbani with his lawyer talking with visitors
STORYLINE:
Ahmad Rabbani, a Pakistani artist recently released from Guantanamo Bay prison by U.S. authorities, exhibited his artwork in Karachi on Tuesday.
Titled The Unforgotten Moon: Liberating Art from Guantanamo Bay, the group exhibition primarily features artwork by Rabbani.
Held at the Art and Architecture Gallery in Karachi, the exhibition also showcases textual interpretations by 11 participating artists.
Rabbani's lawyer saw his artworks during legal meetings and documented them in text to be shared with the artists participating in the Karachi exhibition.
"I began painting between 2010 and 2011. However, after we initiated a hunger strike in 2013, they (U.S. officials) did not permit me to paint until 2016. They destroyed most of my artwork," says Rabbani.
He added that only a few pieces survived, which he had sent home.
Pakistani authorities arrested Rabbani and his brother on suspicion of links to al-Qaida in 2002 in Karachi, the country's southern port and largest city.
U.S. officials accused the brothers of assisting al-Qaida members with housing and other logistical support.
The brothers alleged torture while in CIA custody before being transferred to Guantanamo.
U.S. military records describe the two as providing little intelligence of value, and that they did not recant statements made during interrogations on the grounds they were obtained through physical abuse.
They were both released in February this year.
