Modernist poetry in English started in the early years of the 20th century with the appearance of the Imagists. In common with many other modernists, these poets wrote in reaction to the perceived excesses of Victorianpoetry, with its emphasis on traditional formalism and ornate diction. In many respects, their criticism echoes what William Wordsworth wrote in Preface to Lyrical Ballads to instigate the Romantic movement in British poetry over a century earlier, criticising the gauche and pompous school which then pervaded, and seeking to bring poetry to the layman.
Much of early modernist poetry took the form of short, compact lyrics. As it developed, however, longer poems came to the foreground. These represent the modernist movement to the 20th-century English poetic canon.
Modernist poetry refers to poetry written, mainly in Europe and North America, between 1890 and 1950 in the tradition of modernist literature, but the dates of the term depend upon a number of factors, including the nation of origin, the particular school in question, and the biases of the critic setting the dates. The critic/poet C. H. Sisson observing in his essay Poetry and Sincerity 'Modernity has been going on for a long time. Not within living memory has there ever been a day when young writers were not coming up, in a threat of iconoclasm Evidence of the truth of Sisson's comment is Arthur Hallam's 'On Some of the Characteristics of Modern poetry, published in 1830 in Moxon's English Magazine
Background
Notwithstanding it is usually said to have begun with the French Symbolist movement and it artificially ends with the Second World War, the beginning and ending of the modernist period are of course arbitrary. Poets like W. B. Yeats (1865–1939) and Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) started in a post-Romantic, Symbolist vein and modernised their poetic idiom after being affected by political and literary developments. Imagism proved radical and important, marking a new point of departure for poetry. Some consider 'it began in the works of Hardy and Pound, Eliot and Yeats, Williams and Stevens. English language poets, like T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Basil Bunting ( 'a born modernist'),Wallace Stevens and E.E. Cummings also went on to produce work after World War II.

Why Is Modern Poetry So Bad
NOTE: One of the non poems I included was actually by Thom Young (the guy pretending to be a Instagram poet). Made a quick error there and was kindly corrected :)

While this video is titled 'Why Is Modern Poetry So Bad' it definitely focuses more on slam poetry trends and bad Instagram poetry from the 2010s (but I still think the criticism upholds!). As someone who has loved slam poetry (and was somewhat of a slam poet herself, I've noticed certain trends in online poetry, specifically Instagram poets, Instagram poetry, and Instagram poems) that make me call into question the modern structure of this art form. Why is rupi kaur made so much fun of? Why is Atticus popular? Why are so many Instagram poets the exact same brand of mediocre? I don't really say they're names, but I do basical...

Cormac McCarthy on Modern Poetry
Cormac McCarthy is a huge fan of poetry. Even calling himself (Suttree) "the poet" for multiple drafts of "Suttree." In today's video we will review McCarthy's published poetry, a clip of him talking about modern poetry, and his poetic influences which include Robert Frost, Dylan Thomas, Yeats, Ezra Pound, and more! I will also go over how McCarthy was in the last real generation of poets who were inventing poetry as a collective before the meritocracy of poetry was destroyed forever!

Why is modern poetry difficult? Talk by Professor Geoff Ward
In this lecture at Madingley Hall, Professor Geoff Ward tries to get to the source of the discomfort that many readers experience in their encounters with modern poetry. He asks whether schools are to blame for instilling a fear of poetry, or whether poetry itself has taken any wrong turnings following the innovations of T S Eliot, the Surrealists, and others. In this critical but also autobiographical account, he takes us on a journey at whose end the difficulty of poetry is shown to be not so much a mountain to climb, as a pleasure to be enjoyed.

Is Instagram poetry changing the landscape of poetry? Is this some sort of poetic revolution that will change the face of literature? Or is this just another victim of our obsession with surface-level content to gain online popularity?
this entire video is opinion based (with some cited facts) that are not meant to pock fun of your tastes, what you enjoy or specific individuals, but just reflect on my own observations :)

Professor Geoffrey Ward PhD FRSA has been Principal of Homerton College, University of Cambridge since 2013, prior to which he worked as Vice Principal and Professor of English and Creative Writing at Royal Holloway, University of London. His critical books include Statutes of Liberty: The New York School of Poets (1993, 2002) and he has published several collections of his own poetry, most recently Worry Dream (2013). He writes and presents occasional broadcasts on American writers for BBC Radio 3, and is a member of the editorial board of The Cambridge Quarterly.

I don't really say they're names, but I do basically ask these questions during the video.

Today we're reviewing the poetry of Atticus and taking a look at what quality poetry is instead by reading some Shakespeare, John Donne, Yahuda Amichai, Christina Rossetti, Ian Duhig and Langston Hughes.

In this lecture, Dr Madeleine Davies (University of Reading) explores the genre of literary modernism, focusing in particular on: (i) its development from the literature of the Victorian period; (ii) the importance of the ordinary or the everyday (“the ordinary mind on an ordinary day”); (iii) the difference in plot and character compared to the Victorian novel; (iv) the use of symbolism; and (v) the emphasis on sexuality.
This lecture is part of a larger course on Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway. The full course can be found here: https://www.massolit.io/courses/woolf-mrs-dalloway?source=yt-literary-modernism-dalloway-davies

Walking down the street in the city Now I am one of the boys, looking pretty And people turn their heads as I walk by And girls says to me; if you don’t want me I must die But I ignore them, I aint got the time I keep on walking as horny girls stand in line ‘Cause I know they are after my shoes My tiny red dr. martens boots I know, I know Everybody wants my dr. martens boots Went into a pub to get a beer When everybody stopped talking and started to stare The pub owner said; you’ll get anything for free But I know what he wanted out of me I can’t just give away my new air wear Then I could go around naked for what I care My martens is the only thing I wear My martens is the only thing I hold dear
