Newfoundland and Labrador (/njuːfənˈlændændˈlæbrədɔːr/, French:Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador) is the most easterly province of Canada. Situated in the country's Atlantic region, it comprises the island of Newfoundland and mainland Labrador to the northwest, with a combined area of 405,212 square kilometres (156,500sqmi). In 2013, the province's population was estimated at 526,702. About 92% of the province's population lives on the island of Newfoundland (and its neighboring smaller islands), of whom more than half live on the Avalon Peninsula. The province is Canada's most linguistically homogeneous, with 97.6% of residents reporting English (Newfoundland English) as their mother tongue in the 2006 census. Historically, Newfoundland was also home to unique varieties of French and Irish, as well as the extinct Beothuk language. In Labrador, local dialects of Innu-aimun and Inuktitut are also spoken.

Did you know that Newfoundland and Labrador were once an independent country in the same manner as Canada was? It's true! It was called the Dominion of Newfoundland and due to a series of unfortunate events, it had to relinquish its independence. In today's video, we cover the vast geography of the province, it's very old history (including Vikings!) and how the country managed to lose its independence when it managed to survive on its own for decades. Oh... and we'll also talk about why Labrador got included in the name upon confederating with Canada.

Newfoundland - On the Shores of Canada's Most Spectacular Coast | Nature Documentary
Watch 'Alaska - The Last Frontier' here: https://youtu.be/wTujSh4fBXk
In Newfoundland, at the easternmost tip of North America, the landscape is pristine, dramatic, and very sparsely populated. In summer, icebergs occasionally drift along the steep cliffs. When the "Titanic" collided with an iceberg and sank just 300 miles off the coast of Newfoundland in 1912, the last radio messages were picked up in a small wooden hut on the Avalon Peninsula.
Today, most Newfoundlanders live on Avalon. There are particularly many seabirds here. In Witless Bay, the newborn puffins are ready for their first descent into the Atlantic. But some stray onto the coastal road, attracted by the lights of the hotels and restaurants. In doing so, they run the risk of being run over. A team of volunteers saves the lives of countless young birds: The Puffin & Petrel Patrol goes out at night dressed in high-visibility vests to collect the puffins. Biologist Sabrina Wilhelm then brings them back to Green Island, home to the largest puffin colony in North America. Here, the birds catch up on what they should have done long ago: the first dive of their lives.

Newfoundland is my favorite place in the world, but there are unique challenges here. Combine these with a few more common challenges, and you might find that this isn't the place where you will live your best life. On the other hand, sometimes all it takes is some advance notice so you can prepare for the hard stuff, and then you won't be caught off guard.
