Acorn TV Original | The South Westerlies | Official Trailer
This picturesque Irish drama stars Orla Brady (American Horror Story: 1984, Into the Badlands) as a single working mom and environmental consultant hired to go undercover to quash objections to a Norwegian-owned wind farm earmarked for a small town on the southwest coast of Ireland. However, Kate Ryan has a personal (and complicated) history with the West Cork town of Carrigeen- one she’s not so keen to revisit, where she prefers to keep old secrets firmly under wraps. #AcornTV #NowStreaming #TheSouthWesterlies

LRM Online's Gig Patta chatted with actress Orla Brady for the drama Rose Plays Julie.
Rose (Ann Skelly) is at university studying veterinary science. An only child, she has enjoyed a loving relationship with her adoptive parents. However, for as long as Rose can remember she has wanted to know who her biological parents are and the facts of her true identity. After years trying to trace her birth mother, Rose now has a name and a number. All she has to do is pick up the phone and call. When she does it quickly becomes clear that her birth mother has no wish to have any contact. Rose is shattered. A renewed and deepened sense of rejection compels her to keep going. Rose travels from Dublin to London in an effort to confront her birth mother, Ellen (Orla Brady).
Ellen is deeply disturbed when Rose turns up unannounced. The very existence of this young woman threatens the stability of the new life Ellen has painstakingly put together. But Rose proves very tenacious and Ellen is forced to reveal a secret she has kept hidden for over 20 years. This shocking revelation forces Rose to accept the violent nature of how she came into existence.
Rose believes she has little to lose but much to gain when she sets out to confront her biological father, Peter (Aidan Gillen). What Rose cannot possibly foresee is that she is on a collision course that will prove both violent and unsettling – dark forces gather and threaten to destroy her already fragile sense of her own identity.
Nominated for “Best Film” at the London Film Festival, ROSE PLAYS JULIE has garnered accolades at festivals the world over. Alistair Ryder of Film Inquiry wrote “Christine Malloy and Joe Lawlor’s film is one of the best screen depictions of the internal struggle of being adopted perfectly realizing a character’s permanent sense of existential displacement, and constant worries that she’s not living the life she was intended for. I was absolutely floored by this film”. Martyn Conterio of CineVue says that “its emotional dilemmas, depictions of trauma, revenge and fractured family ties are handled with such skill and sense of purpose, it is truly exemplary film-making." And Jared Mobarak of The Film Stage calls ROSE PLAYS JULIE “a powerful journey into the heart of darkness."

The South Westerlies is a six-part drama first aired in RTE in September 2020.
The South Westerlies program on RTE was mostly shot in and around Wicklow Town. Shooting locations include Wicklow Main Street, Wicklow Harbour and Brittas Bay.
Watch here interviews with staring actors Steve Wall, Ger Ryan, Eileen Walsh, Patrick Bergin, Kevin Ryan, Orla Brady about their Wicklow Experience!
Plot:
Based in Dublin, Kate Ryan (Orla Brady) is working as an Environmental Compliance consultant for Norwegian energy giant Noreg Oil, she’s on the verge of a lucrative promotion and transfer to HQ in Oslo. But there’s a caveat; a final assignment for NorskVentus (Noreg Oil’s new wind-power subsidiary).
For single working mother Kate, tasked with going undercover to bring the wind farm project home, her eco-battle is compounded by the return of a crinkly-eyed surfer (Steve Wall) from her past.
Despite getting planning permission for their wind farm, offshore from the West Cork town of Carrigeen, ongoing local protests are creating a PR nightmare. Kate must go undercover to Carrigeen, quash objections before the six-week Appeals deadline and smooth the path for imminent turbine installation, or her promotion is off the table. She’s furious, and her son Conor’s not pleased either.
Kate’s old friend Breege (Eileen Walsh) is hurt that Kate never kept in touch. As the pressure piles on from HQ in Oslo, Kate finally discovers a pro-wind farm ally in the shape of Callum Kelleher (Kevin J Ryan), the local radio-journalist, after staying at his parent’s B&B (Ger Ryan plays Noreen Kelleher, with Patrick Bergin as local councillor "Big Mike" Kellegher)
